Identify different types of communication

devices
Fact Sheet
Wired Devices
Data terminal equipment (DTE) An equipment that can be a
source or a destination for digital data. They can also be called
tail circuits. Typical DTEs are routers, access servers and a
terminal.

Data circuit-terminating equipment

Data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE) are tools that sends
or receives signals through a network. The data that they get
from the signals are converted into a communications link.
Examples of DCE included: modems that works as a translator
for a digital or an analogue signal, satellites and microwave
stations.

Wireless Devices
Wireless devices are communication devices that can send
signals to others devices without having to use a cable.
Examples: Bluetooth is a very flexible and convenient type of
network. It can be used to send print jobs from a laptop to a
nearby printer without the hassle of setting up shared
resources over a LAN. In the home and office, wireless routers

with built-in modems, hubs and switches broadcast a local area

network (LAN) for computers in the area to join.

Mobile Phones
Modern cell phones are capable of
much more than just sending and
receiving phone calls. Mobile
phones used in todays world allow
users to send and receive text
messages, emails, photos and
video as well as access the
Internet, play games and listen to
music.
Modern mobile phones also have wireless capability in the
form of infrared, Bluetooth and other wireless protocols
therefore you can connect to the internet.
Mobiles phones are usually small enough to fit into your
pocket
The weight of the phone used to make that call was about
the same as a bag of sugar (2lb). The bricklike battery
required, which allowed a talk time of just 30 minutes and
took 10 hours to charge, made carting it around even
more of a chore.

Laptop
Laptops functions as a portable computer. It retains
functions such as word processors, rendering videos and
browsing the internet.

The first successful laptop

computer was the Japanese
Kyocera Kyotronic 85,
introduced in 1983. Laptop
computers were not IBM
compatible until 1986.
Most laptops these days run
on lithium-based batteries. Lithium-ion batteries have an
average lifespan of 2 to 3 years when used regularly. They
will slowly lose their charge capacity over that period.

Netbook
Netbooks are smaller and cheap laptop computers that
usually used for web-based applications such as Microsoft
Outlook.
A typical netbook ranges from 8
inches (20.3 cm) to 11.6 inches
(29.5 cm), with smaller keyboards,
reduced computing power and
fewer USB ports.
Screen resolution of netbooks are
usually 1024x768

GPRS
GPRS or general packet radio
service is a method which speeds
up 2g phones therefore they are
able to send and receive data
faster.
With GPRS enabled, you can make a
voice call while data is sent to
another person
GPRS is a technology that aims to
speed up 2G connections thats closer to 3G connection
speeds. These are called 2.5G
It also has different classes; from class 2 to class 12. The
connection speed goes up the higher the class.

3G
3G technology allows phones to have more services and
features allowed e.g. email and internet browsing.
3G networks can a large amount of files at high speeds at
2MB speeds.
HSDPA and HSUPA (high speed download and upload
packet access) allows for 3G connections to reach
download speeds of 21mb and 1.7mb when use with a wifi
modem or router.
Wireless Networks
Wireless networks are used and designed to both lessen the
setup time, and all of the obstacles a cabled network would
face. This is why wireless networks are much more
convenient compared to wired networks. Basically the major
advantages wireless has over wire is the fact that there are
no cables involved, and any problems with cable are gone.
Wireless networks are used for communications and data
transfer. However, all these types of transmissions though
wireless networking are done by different types of waves.
These are the advantages wireless networks have compared
to wired ones. The data transfer speed for the following
wireless types are as follows:

802.11a around about 6-54MBs

802.11b around about 1-11MBs

802.11g around about 6-54MBs

802.11n around about 15-150MBs

The speeds listed above are estimates, and depend on the

frequency of the network as this is what controls the best
network data transfer speeds.
Wired Networks
Wired networks also known as a local area networking
technology, uses a cables such as CAT5 to transfer data to

one place to another. This data is sent in the form of both

digital and analogue signals. One of the advantages a cabled
network has over a wireless one is that wall and other thick
surfaces wont affect the signal and speed of the data
passing though the network. Wired networks can be used to
send, receive and to network many other computers
together and is often used in a business environment due to
its speed and efficiently. Also wired networking is much
quicker than wireless network, due to the cabling. 1000MBs
is possible though the use of wired networks, which is a big
point to consider when it is being used in traffic heavy
situations. The data transfer speed though certain cables in a
wired network are:

Cat-5 around about 10-100MBs

Cat-5e around about 10-100MBs and 1GBs

Cat-6 around about 10-100MBs and 1-10GBs in order

to reach 10GB the cables has the be less than 55 meter in
length

Cat-6a around about 10-100MBs and 1-10GBs
