5. Stove
Part B
5 Methods for home heating
Method
Hydronic Heating
Systems

Active solar heating

Electric Resistance
Heating

Radiant Heating

Heat Pump Systems

Advantages

Disadvantages

-You can switch off zones to

rooms not in use, and thus
save energy.
-You can tie in an outdoor
wood furnace in to a
hydronic system and heat
with wood
-Solar energy is free
although there is a cost in
the building
-Solar energy does not
cause pollution

-residential hydronic
systems cannot provide
cooling
-Damage can result in piping
leaks

-The temperature can be

controlled easily room by
room or zone by zone.
-Electric heating systems
are generally less expensive
to purchase and install than
others.
-it allows for more flexibility
in placing furniture around
the room.
-The heat produced is also
more evenly distributed
throughout the room
-Heat pumps are safer than
systems based on
combustion.
-Can provide cooling during
the summer

-Solar energy can only be

harnessed when it is
daytime and sunny
-Solar collectors, panels and
cells are relatively
expensive to manufacture
-Expensive to operate
-electrical hazard of shock
and fire

-The lack of ductwork leaves

much to be desired for
cooling.
-many contractors are not
familiar with their
installation
-Heat pump systems have a
high startup cost.
-They are fairly difficult to
install

Which method would you chose and why?

If I was going to choose one of these methods for my own
home i would chose the heat pump system because that is what
we have in our house now and it works really well. If you have a
heat pump it can be costly at first but it saves a lot of money on
electricity each month so it pays for itself in no time. I would also
like a heat pump because it is environmentally friendly and
energy efficient compared to other methods like furnaces. Heat
pumps can be 30 to 50 percent more efficient and can reduce
cost of electricity bills. Heat pumps can heat the house is the
summer but can also cool the house in the winter so they are
good year round.

My energy consumption for one day includes the heating and

lighting of our house most of the day. Also all through the night
my clock and phone charger. Including the cooing and a few other
things it turns out to be more than you would expect. Three ways
I could cut down on my energy consumption are to take a shorter
shower in the morning, turn off any lights when they don't need to
be on and use natural light instead, and to watch less TV
throughout the day.

One page essay on most environmentally friendly forms

on energy
I think the forms of energy that would be most
environmentally friendly are solar power, wind power and
hydroelectricity.
Solar power is very environmentally friendly because it
uses the rays from the sun and converts it into energy
without creating and pollution or harming the environment.
Solar panels can be expensive to build but they also last a
long time and do not let out any bad chemicals or gases into
the atmosphere.

Wind power is also very environmentally friendly

because it converts wind into energy. Large-scale wind farms
are typically connected to the local power transmission
network with small turbines used to provide electricity to
isolated areas. Residential units are entering production and
are capable of powering large appliances to entire houses
depending on the size. Wind farms installed on agricultural
land or grazing areas, have one of the lowest environmental
impacts of all energy sources.
Hydroelectricity is very environmentally friendly because
it is created from the gravitational force from falling or
flowing water. It is the most widely used form of renewable
energy. Once a hydroelectric complex is constructed, the
project produces no direct waste. Small scale hydro or microhydro power has been an increasingly popular alternative
energy source, especially in remote areas where other power
sources are not viable. Small scale hydro power systems can
be installed in small rivers or streams with little or no
discernible environmental effect or disruption to fish
migration.
This is why I think solar power, wind power and
hydroelectricity are the most environmentally friendly energy
forms. These forms are being used more and more all the
time and i think they should be used more to reduce the
environmental impact we have.
