SUMMARY IN ENGLISH

Media serve as tools of conveying information and data. The media that intend to reach a mass
audience, may be called the mass media. In order to expand its reach, a given medium may use
the Internet, which is considered a mass medium. Because of the fact that the Internet is
constantly being developed, media such as television, radio or the press, create their own
websites that are supposed to attract the attention of the highest possible number of people.

A tabloid is a type of newspaper that is usually published in a specific format. Tabloids are
characterized by their tendency to exaggerate facts, and provide their readers with the
entertainment as well as information about private lives of celebrities and politicians. As one
of the purposes of tabloids is to generate revenue, they try to attract the attention of the audience.
By the use of the language of manipulation in headlines, articles may seem to be more
interesting, therefore inclining some of their readers to buy the newspaper. One of such
newspapers is the New York Post, the second most popular tabloid in the United States,
however, one with the least credibility.

Linguistic manipulation devices, which use may be found in tabloids headlines, could be
divided in few groups. Firstly, the three Aristotles modes of persuasion ethos, pathos and
logos. Further groups are: manipulation devices of phonetics; morphology and lexicon;
semantics and finally syntactics. By using them, headlines may be capable of influencing their
audience.

Due to the aforementioned devices, headlines are capable of manipulating people, by appealing
to him in a credible, emotional or rational manner. Some of the headlines do not reveal all the
important information about the article, thus inclining the audience to read it, whereas other
headlines, create images of events described in them. Headlines used in order to create the
impression that they are directed to the readers, are also of common use.
