1.0

PURPOSE
To establish & maintain a procedure for carrying out filling to formation,
backfilling of soil and landscaping at work sites.

SCOPE
This procedure shall be applicable to all types of filling & backfilling works
undertaken by the Company with light earth moving equipment only.

5.0

PROCEDURE

5.1

Responsibility
The responsibility for carrying out this Method Statement shall be that of the
Project Engineer, unless otherwise specifically mentioned in this procedure.
The Quality Engineer/ Project Engineer shall be responsible for inspection &
testing.

5.2

Liaise & cooperate with the Customer and with owners, occupiers of the
adjoining structures (if applicable) likely to be affected by filling.
5.3

Exchange of Information
Obtain the following instructions from the Customer/ as per specifications
before start of work and ensure the same shall be followed:

Material to be used for filling including water & its available location.
Optimum water content of filling material.
The depth of layers.
The method and equipment for compaction.
The scheduled start and finish of filling activity.
Density to be achieved after compaction.

Protection
Ensure protection of all services, drains, manholes, gullies and bench marks.
Necessary warning tapes as per Contract specifications/ relevant Government
regulations shall be laid before backfilling. Old foundations, manholes if
encountered shall be removed with consent of the Customer.

5.5

Filling

5.5.1

General Filling

5.5.1.1 The filling material shall be spreaded evenly & compacted, if contractually
agreed, otherwise allowed for settlement in layers of compacted thickness
250mm or as per Contract specifications.
5.5.1.2 The water shall be added to ensure uniform mixing at optimum moisture
content to achieve maximum dry density i.e. MDD.
5.5.1.3 Adequate compaction with the help of suitable equipment of specified weight
and passes shall be done.
5.5.2

Structural Filling (Providing Support to Structure)

5.5.2.1 Ensure spreading & compaction of filling shall be done to the finished levels in
layers, as contractually agreed.
5.5.2.2 Each layer shall be compacted to the specified density or by the specified
number of passes of the specified compaction equipment.
5.5.3

Structural Backfilling (Providing Support to Structure)


Ensure spreading & compaction of hard-core filling shall be done to finished
levels in layers, not exceeding 250 mm thick or as agreed with the Quality

Engineer/ Customer (if required) with suitable mechanical compacting


equipment of specified weight & passes.
5.6

Testing
The testing shall be done as per Contract specifications/ as at the rate of 500
m2 per sample or as agreed with the Quality Engineer to ensure that the
backfilling attains required compaction.

5.7

Disposal of Surplus Material


The surplus material shall be disposed off at areas designated by the
Customer (if required) / Local Authority/ and with the Quality Engineer.

6.0

DOCUMENTATION / RECORDS
Relative density of soil in Place
