Q1)Why did the artist decide to include the conveyor belt in the visual and how

is it effective in conveying the message of the visual.

The conveyor belt is a continuous moving band of fabric, rubber, or metal used for
transporting objects from one place to another. It is usually used in factories to
transport mass products at a faster rate. A belt conveyor is a system of pulleys with a
long loop of fabric or other material stretched between them. Usually at least one of
the pulleys is motorized to pull the belt along with it. They are used to conveniently
move heavy objects from one part of a processing facility to another.
Thus the artist decided to include the conveyor belt in the visual to illustrate the fact
thatoverpopulation is occurring at an alarming rate. He includes the conveyor belt in
his drawing to show the rate at which human population is increasing which is similar
to the rate of mass production in factories every day.
It is effective as the people falling from the conveyor belt, illustrates the
consequences of overpopulation. These are the death due to insufficient space and
living in overcrowded places with poor living conditions. It creates a sense of
realization among the individuals and causes them to ponder over what they can do
help the earth by controlling overpopulation.
Q2) What is unusual yet effective about the visual?
It is unusual because the earth is personified as a living thing. Also, the earth has its
feeling. It is vomiting because it feels unwell. This guides people to think deeper and
analyse the feeling of the earth caused by overpopulation. Overpopulation amplified
the demand of natural resources and thus more resources are being exploited. There is
an increasing demand of food and other basic necessities. Therefore, more minerals will
have to be mined, more forest felled and more fish caught. The natural resources found
on earth will soon be depleted. These are dangerous to the earth and soon it will not be
able to stand the large number of people relying on it. So, it will try to give up the burden
and eventually hurt people themselves. The visual shows the earth in pain and the
people in danger which illustrate the cause and effect of overpopulation.
It is effective in illustrating a way to make the viewers think about the real situation due
to overpopulation: heavier burden caused by an inappropriate number of people on the
earth. It creates a sense of realization among people and enables them to reflect upon
their acts like over-exploiting and unsuccessful population policy in many parts of the
world. It also helps the viewers to understand more about the crisis the earth is facing.
Also, the scene that people sliding down the belt and falling makes people feel alarmed
about their own fate as the visual shows the negative effect on humans themselves
caused by overpopulation.

Q3)What will happen in future if this situation were to continue?

If the world population is going to increase at an alarming rate without any control,
there will be an increase in competition for employment. Statistics has shown that by
2019, more than 212 million people will be out of work, up from 201 million now,
according to the ILOs report, World Employment and Social Outlook Trends 2015.

From this, we can infer that unemployment rate in the world will change drastically in
the years to come. This would cause youths entering the workforce and people from
all over the world to get more competitive as more people will be competing for the
same number of limited jobs.
Moreover, the children born might not have enough food and might face various
conditions and diseases such as malnutrition. Statistics have shown that one out of
every seven people go to bed hungry. Every day about 25,000 people die of
malnutrition and hunger-related diseases; almost 18,000 of them are children under
the age of five. Due to this many children die at a very tender age, contributing to an
increase the infant mortality rate.
There is also a decrease in literacy rate due to the increase in population. As there is
an increase in population, there is a need to provide enough education for the
growing young population. Less developed countries will feel the strain on its
economy to ensure adequate education facilities for the people. Through statistics, it
has been proven that there are more issues regarding overpopulation in
undeveloped countries compared to developed countries. According to the United
Nations, population increases have slowed down or even stopped in developed
countries like Europe, North America, and Japan. Nevertheless, global population
continues to rise at a rate of roughly 78 million people per year. Most of the growth is
taking place in developing countries like sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South and
Western Asia.
Last but not the least, if there is an increase in population, there will be a higher
demand for housing. However, the less developed countries do not have enough
financial support to provide sufficient housing for their citizens. As a result squatter
settlements and make-shift houses have sprouted around the outskirts of cities of
less developed countries due to the lack of proper housing. As a result the various
consequences can affect the country adversely and increase the number of deaths.
