PL/6, on Polyethylene Pipe, under the direction of the Building StandardsPolicy tsoard.

The Committee decided to use the terminology macro-composite to better describe the
pipe structure. The term 'macro' reflects the three separate component layers working
together in the pipe wall as opposed to the more common fibre-reinforced composite pipe
slructures.

1.7 PACKAGING
P i p e m a y b e s u p p l i e d e i t h e r c o i l e d o r i n s t r a i g h t l e n g t h sa s a g r e e d
with the customer. If the pipe is coiled, the coiling shall be carried out at a temperature
that will ensure that the difference befween the minimum and maximum outside pipe
diameters at any cross-sectiondoes not exceed l0% of the maximum outside diameter of
the pipe.

2,1,3 Adhesion When tested in accordancewith Appendix C, there shall be no
separationof the inner or outer polyethylene or cross-linked polyethylene layers from the
aluminium core.
2,1,1 Freedom from defects Defects shall not affect the performance or function of
the pipe in service, Pipes shall be free from blisters, foreign matter and heat marks. Where
grooves, wrinkles, rippling, dents or projections are present, the pipe shall comply with

3.1.2 Size and type The method for specifyingthe size and type of fittings shall be in

3.1.3 Freedom from defects Fittings shall be clean, smooth and free from burrs, fins,
irregularities and sharp edges that could affect the performance or function of the fitting
in service and the safe handling of the fitting during installation and use. There shall be
no imperfections that will score the pipe or cause damage to other fittings. The bore of
the fittings shall be free from irregularities that may restrict the free flow of fluids.
Connection ends shall be parallel within *2" of the appropriateaxis of the fitting.
The surfaces of plastic components shall be free from grooves, pinholes, blisters. heat
marks or other imperfections that would affect the performance or function of the fitting
in service.
Fittings, including components of metallic materials, shall be sound and free from folds,
laps, blisters, laminations, blowholes and other imperfections that could af'fect the
performance or functions of the fittings in service. Pitting shall not be present on sealing
faces or thread faces. Pitting shall be permissiblein other locations provided the minimum
wall thickness provisions of the manufacturer's specifications are maintained and the pits
will not affect the performance or function of the fining in service.

C2 PRINCIPLE A spiral cut is made through the wall of a length of pipe and the
resulting strip straightened out and inspected. Any sign of separation of the polymer
layers from the aluminium core is taken as failure.
C3 APPARATUS A sharp knife or razor blade capable of cutting the pipe into a
spiral. The blade should be mounted in a jig and fixed to a bench so that there is no risk
to the operator ( see Figure C I ).
