Journal Entries from Project

June 4, 2015
Arrived at the Five County Association of Governments at 9:30 for my first of several
trainings. I hadnt realized how much time it would take to do the project and accumulate
required training material. So far, total number of hours setting up the trainings and
preparation time has taken me close to 20 hours. I traveled to St. George a couple days ago
to pick up a roll of I got trained stickers from the American Red Cross. (as suggested by
the Red Cross) Paul the (director) informed me that they had just ran out and gave me
Michael Nortons number. Michael is one of the managing directors for the health and safety
services in the state of Utah. I was able to reach Michael, but the stickers were unavailable.
Michael discovered that my credentials were valid however, I was not in their system.
Michael sent me an authorized provider agreement so I am again able to get credit for
courses that I have given.
The training went very well today. I had the privilege of working with 16 teens and 3 adults
in my training. The kids volunteer around the community and have monthly meetings to
help with accountability and training purposes. I was unable to teach a portion of the hands
only course today because of the majority of the students were under the acceptable age
for teacher leaders. I was not sure if I was going to be able to do that portion anyway
because of age requirement of 16. Overall, the training was considered a success. It
appeared most of the children were engaged and excited to be learning hands-on
compressions on the provided manikin. After arriving home today from the training, I
compiled pictures, washed and changed the air sack in the manikin and now writing in my
journal. I still need to call Rob at Enoch City, to verify everything is still good to go for
community trainings later on this month.

Cleaned manikins at 4:00, I had to run by the store to buy life saver treats for guests tonight.
Set up and got everything ready for this evening. Some participants arrived before the
training and the remaining arrived after 7pm. The training went well, one woman was more
than happy to take a couple photos of me while teaching which was very nice of her. I was
hoping for a larger turn out, because both the city and I had been advertising the training on
our facebook pages for a couple weeks now. I need to clean the manikin and finish up on
paper work, its 10:00, feeling very tired.

Tonight I had three individuals at my training including Enoch City Councilman Rob Dobson.
All participants demonstrated skills and competency in the leadership and training portion of
the meeting. One participant shared an experience about a time he had to give chest
compressions to a woman who had suddenly collapsed. He told of how he was the only
person who engaged CPR while others stood around not knowing what to do. Another
gentleman was a retired army medic and EMT. He told of how wartime CPR can be much
more difficult especially on the front lines. He demonstrated how they were taught to place
their foot on the chest and apply compressions, that way giving them the ability to free their
hands. Im counting my hours of cumulative project service work right now and have
enough time to call the project finished, however, I do have two more trainings scheduled.

Cleaned manikins last night and went through the lesson plan for today. Spent the morning
collecting more training manuals and skills sheets. Arrived at city building at 6:30 to set up
training. No people showed up for the training tonight. Communicated with Rob Dobson and
let him know that I believed to be finished with the required hours and service for my EDGE
project. He seemed very happy that I was able to provide that type of service to the
community and invited me back to give these courses whenever I would like.
