A preposition is a word that connects a
noun or pronoun with some other word in
a sentence.
Example: The colors of our flag are red,
white, and blue.
(The preposition of relates flag to colors.)

A preposition may show:
DIRECTION: toward, behind, from, around
Example: She ran toward the door.
TIME: before, after, during, while
Example: She will come back after lunch.
POSITION: on, under, over, inside
Example: He left them on the desk.
CAUSE: due to, on account of, because of
Example: It was due to his carelessness.

Prepositional Phrases
The word preposition comes from the Latin pre
meaning before and posit meaning to place.

The preposition is placed before a noun or pronoun


which is called the object of the preposition.
The preposition and the object of the preposition
together are called a prepositional phrase.
