ASK Show cool sculptures, ask how is this art different from the art we have been doing?
SHOW 3-D art examples. Have students pick out 3-D objects around the room.
INTRODUCE 3-D form vs. 2-D shape. 3-D has height, width, and depth (draw examples on board,
physically stand and show H, W, & D).
DEMONSTRATE IN STAGES Show example of pumpkin 1. How to knead clay. 2. Roll clay into a ball. 3.
How to create hole in center of ball by pushing thumb down. 4. How to pinch clay into a pumpkin shape. 5.
How to make pumpkin lid from disk of clay. 6. How to pinch clay from lid into a stem. 7. How to make
leaves from disk of clay. 8. How to carve out face shapes. 9. Create line patterns in pumpkin, stem, and
leaves with pointy tool.
CREATE BY: 1. Knead clay form into a ball shape. 2. Use thumb to make hole in center of ball by pushing
down. 3. Pinch into a pumpkin shape. 4. Make lid from a disk of clay the same size as pumpkin. 5. Pinch
stem from lid. 6. Carve out face shapes in pumpkin with clay tools. 8. Make leaves from disk of clay. 9. Add
patterns in pumpkin and stem and leaves with clay tools. 10. Dry. 11. Paint.
WRAP UP (higher order goes here) Express with your neighbor how you used form to create a 3-D
sculpture showing patterns.
Assessment: Did the student complete the project? Did they do a neat job? Does their art reflect the
lessons objectives?
Materials /Resources: clay, clay tools or other pointy objects, water, paint, paint brushes
