ACTIVITY 5 : STYLE: REALISM

Subject : Parol or Christmas Lantern
ELEMENT OF ART : Shape ( Organic and Geometric)

What You Need

1 white cartolina, cut into an 8 inch circle, manila paper, pentel pen, scissors, art materials
12-inch square black cartolina, pencil, ruler, coloring tools, colored pencils, felt pens, watercolor ,etc.)

San Fernando, Pampanga is noted for its beautiful and colorful Christmas lanterns. Research on this
Philippine folk art so that you can gain more ideas for this activity.
The star design varies in the regions. Foe example, the symbol of the star in the Mt. Province is quite
different from the one in the Southern Philippines. You may use the star motif in your region if you prefer.
Be sure to follow the particular colors and patterns that are found in the design.

What To Do :
Create a radial design that starts from the center moving outwards using a 5-pointed star (pentagram) or a
6-pointed one (star of David) or 8-pointed (star of Bethlehem) on the 8 inch cartolina. Be sure to make the
points of the star touch the edge of the circle.
Draw patterns inside the star, similar to the patterns used in regional lanterns. Color the star brightly. You
may vary the tones to give an illusion of depth. When you have finished, glue your design on the 12-inch
black cartolina.
Study your artwork and answer the following questions.
1. How will you describe your artwork ?

2. What kind of radial design did you use for the star ?Why did you choose it over the others ?__________

3. Which type of shape is more dominant in your artwork—geometric or organic ? What does this imply ?
