LEOPOLD DAMM-AN EVERYDAY HERO

Leopold Damm is my Great Grandfather.
Leo was born in 1901in the Bronx, New
York. He later died on December 19, 1960
on the USS Constellation. Leo is such a big
part of my project because he is the only
person in my family that I found a lot of
information about. I had never heard
about him prior to this project which is
why I am so interested in him. He was
truly a hero. Sacrificing his life to save his
friends on the USS Constellation shows a
lot about his character.

DAMM GRAVE
This is my family grave which sits in the Gate of Heaven
Cemetery located in Hawthorne ,New York. Not only is this grave
interesting to me because so many members of my family have
been buried here, but also because many famous people are
buried in this cemetery. Some of these famous people include
Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, James Farley, and Dutch Schultz(Gate of
Heaven Cemetery). The plot of land that my family bought back
in 1905 was later bought out by what is now called Gate of
Heaven Cemetery in 1916. I called them to see if anyone else
from my family could be buried there and they said that there is
enough room on the plot of land to fit two more bodies. This
Cemetery is a Roman Catholic Cemetery which leads me to
believe that my family was also Roman Catholic.
