ESTIMATION OF LIGHTWEIGHT OF SHIP
Light ship weight is the weight of the ship and its permanent
equipment. The main components of the lightweight of ship are the weight of
structure, outfit, and main machinery.

1. Estimation of steel weight

Empirical formula for the weight of steel is as follows

WS = b 5 5.11 L3.3 2.56 L2 B D 2

+ 2.56 (27 + 12)2 160.0352

= 5006.5836 tonnes
For double hull oil tanker ships steel weight is increased, so 60% is added to
steel weight of single hull ship.
Hence WS = 5006.5836 + 0.6 5006.5836
= 8010.53376
WS=

2. Estimation of outfitting weight

Empirical formula for the weight of outfitting is as follows
WO = (0.325 + 0.0006 L) L B
= (0.325 + 0.0006 160.035) 160.035 27
= 1819.20
WO=

3. Estimation of Machinery weight

Empirical formula for the weight of machinery is as follows
WM=

Pshp
200
10

Where Pshp is power of ship in horse power.

Now WM =

+ 200

= 1267.93
WM=

Now light ship weight is given by

LS = WS+ WO+ WM
= 8010.53376 + 1819.20 + 1267.93
= 11097.66376

Check for Deadweight:

Displacement of a ship is the sum of deadweight and lightweight of a ship.

Now DWT = displacement at summerload waterline LS

= 31955.54 11097.66376
= 20857.87
20858
Actual deadweight of ship = 20660
Calculated deadweight of ship = 20858
Difference = +198 tonnes
