This morning in the over two classrooms T. Bushra got out the giant snakes and
ladders game for our physical game. Jf you are new but your excitement at seeing
the giant blue board resulted in a BYYEEEEEEEE MUM! as you came racing
across the classroom to your new friends. You told T. Natasha Teacher, I want to
play! You lined up behind Fawwaz before telling Layan, No, it is my turn Fawwaz
responded, Layan its Jf turn, then yours, then Kamila, then my turn! Kamila agreed,
yes thats right, teacher? I nodded in response and asked how would Jf like to roll
the dice? Jf you tried to pick up our dice with one hand and exclaimed, wow teacher
it is very big! as you adjusted to using two hands. After counting the numbers on the
dice you decided to hop instead of jump. We all enjoyed a great laugh when Kamila
landed on a snake and decided to get down and roll her body down to the new
number. Layan appreciated your help when you counted the six dots on her dice
after she sighed, I do not know when asked how many spaces she was going to
stomp.

What learning is happening?

Jf you are making great process as you are becoming settled and
establishing friendship ka pai! By taking an interest and being involved
you are demonstrating the positive learning dispositions of courage,
curiosity, trust and playfulness. This tells me your Mana
Whenua/Belonging and Mana Atua/Well-Being are supported and
protected by your teachers. It was excellent to hear you communicate
confidently, with clarity and precision in your second language of
English Jf. You took responsibility for not only your learning but
responsibility for your new friends enjoyment and participation, thank
you Jf.
Throughout our physical game you were exploring mathematical
concepts of quantity, numeral, counting, addition and subtraction. At
the same time you were gaining confidence and control in your body. It
was great to see you using a range of skills such as jumping, hopping,
stamping and rolling as you moved around the board.
Where to next?
Now you are showing signs of settling well we will focus on supporting
your emerging friendships through allowing plenty of free play
opportunities for you to freely practice social interactions, as well as
provide an environment and set-ups that nurture group work and allow
shared interests to be shared with peers.
