HALLWAY POLICY

Dear Parents/Guardians:
We want to welcome your scholar to the sixth, seventh and
eighth grades at Garfield Elementary School. Middle School is a
very exciting time in your scholars life. Your scholar is now
entering a unique period of development both physically and
emotionally. It is critical that we communicate to help guide them
through, what can become, a challenging time. Please speak to
any middle school teacher with questions or concerns about your
scholar.
We look forward to your support and help achieving
academic success throughout the school year. Your scholar
should come to school prepared with their supplies, on time, in
uniform, and ready to learn every day. The following rules and
expectations are in place for the well-being and academic success
of your scholar.
DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS

SCHOOL/CLASSROOM RULES:
1. Follow the directions the first time they are given.
2. Always walk quietly in the hallways and the classrooms.
3. Raise your hand and wait to be called on before speaking.
4. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
5. No food or candy in hallways or classrooms.
6. NO GUM IN SCHOOL.
7. No personal grooming in class.
CONSEQUENCES
1. 1st Warning- scholar will receive a verbal warning.

2. 2nd Warning- scholar will be sent to another room and


possible lunch detention issued
3. 3rd Warning- will be sent to office with a referral
LOCKERS & HALLWAYS
Scholars will be assigned locker times during the day. Scholars
will be required to move through the hallways in a quiet and
orderly manner. Instruction taking place in others classrooms
must be respected.
HOMEWORK
Scholars will receive a Homework Planner to record their daily
homework assignments. It is suggested that you check it daily as
well. Scholars will have a day for every excused absence to make
up missing homework assignments. Teachers will NOT accept
homework late for credit.
DETENTION POLICY
They may receive a detention for any behavior or actions that are
not appropriate to James A. Garfield. Examples: behavior issues,
lack of homework or classwork, not being on task, lack of
necessary materials for classes, inappropriate dress code and/or
chewing gum
Procedure
1. Scholars will be notified that they received a detention.
2. Scholars will sign a detention form agreeing to attend
detention on assigned date.
3. Scholars who choose not to attend their assigned detention
will receive two detentions.
4. Scholars will sign a form acknowledging that they are
responsible to attend assigned detentions.
5. Scholars who choose not to attend their second assigned
detention will be immediately referred to the principal,
parents will be notified and the students will either spend the
day in the Planning Center or serve an in-house suspension.
6. When scholars have received 3 and 4 detentions, they will
notify their parents that they will receive a one day at
home suspension if they are assigned a fifth
detention.

7. After the scholars returns from one day home suspension the
process will start over again.
8. Scholars are responsible for showing you their detention
notifications and having you sign them.
GRADING
Many teachers use online grade books. Parents and scholars will
be able to access assignments, scores, homework, grades and
teacher-parent messaging.
Although some teachers use a different program, many use
Engrade.
Scholars will enter an access code and then choose a
username/password combination. Parents and scholars can then
use their username and password to log in anytime and see their
up-to-date classroom information.
Scholars will receive further information within the first week of
school.
ELECTRONICS/CELL POLICY
All cell phones and electronic devices must be kept in lockers at
all times including lunch and recess. Failure to comply will result
in a lunch detention and/or consequences per CMSD Student
Handbook.
You may contact your scholar at any time by calling the school at
920-7000. In an emergency, the office can transfer your call to
your scholars classroom.
DRESS CODE:
See Attached sheet
Garfield is an air conditioned building. Scholars are
encouraged to bring sweaters (cardigans, pullovers or
vests). Scholars will not be permitted to wear hooded
sweatshirts in classrooms.

Emergency Medical Cards:


It is extremely important to have update information and numbers
for all of our scholars in-case of an emergency. Please maintain
this information with your scholars teachers and office.
