COURSE SYLLABUS FOR SPANISH 3/4

SR. STRAND
bstrand@auburn.wednet.edu
Spanish 3 and 4 are semester-long Spanish courses which comprise the second-year high school
Spanish class. Second-year Spanish will provide an opportunity to understand a new language, in an exciting
collaborative excitement. Students are required to take two years of the same world language in high school to
be accepted into any public university in Washington. Students are strongly encouraged to take three years of
the same world language if they plan to attend most universities, especially UW and WWU.
STUDENT OUTCOMES:
o Students will learn how to read, write, listen and speak in Spanish on an intermediate level.
o Students will learn the basics of the Spanish language through the study of vocabulary and grammar.
o Students will explore varying facets of Hispanic culture through cooking, music, films, holidays,
fashion, history and geography.
o Students will gain an awareness and appreciation of value systems and ways of thinking different from
their own.
o Students will understand the value of knowing Spanish for travel and career opportunities.
BASIC CLASSROOM RULES:
1.) Maintain a safe environment free from physical/emotional threats.
2.) Be responsible for your own actions (or inactions)
3.) Be in your seat from bell to bell.
4.) Get to class. Stay in class.
ELECTRONICS POLICY:
Electronics are a part of this class. They will offer you the ability to communicate and acquire new
learning both inside and outside of the classroom. Responsible use of electronics is mandatory, but it requires
student accountability. By signing the Electronics Policy, you are acknowledging that you understand what the
parameters are for responsible use.
BATHROOM/HALL PASS PROCEDURE:
If you need to leave class to use the bathroom/visit a teacher/go to your locker etc., please simply fill out
the class clipboard, and take the class bathroom pass with you. HOWEVER, if you do leave class during class
time, you will be required to stay after class for two minutes. You are NOT in trouble, but rather making up the
time that you missed. This is also used as a deterrent for those who would otherwise abuse this privilege.
ASSESSMENTS:
There will be frequent quizzes in this class. Quizzes will usually take place at the end of each week.
They can be done to assess comprehension and usage of vocabulary, or the utilization of grammar concepts.
These assessments will constitute 80% of a students grade. Students will be required to keep a log of their
assessments and the scores that they receive. Parent signatures will be required weekly to show that a parent is
aware of your academic status.
RETAKE POLICY:
The majority of the students final grade will be based on these assessments. However, because students
achieve or come to mastery at different times, there are some instances that may warrant a student re-taking a

test. This is an option that will only be available to students who have completed all assignments regarding the
particular learning objective and who complete a form, signed by the parent, explaining how they will prepare
for a re-take of the test. On the form, students must decide upon an adequate preparation plan for the retake
AND presents evidence of its completion. Students will have one week from the time of a test to appeal for a
second test, carry out their preparation plan, and take the test. NOTE: TEST RETAKES ARE AT TEACHER
DISCRETION. NOT ALL TESTS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR RETAKES!

HOMEWORK:
Homework and in-class assignments will happen regularly in this class. The completion of homework is
mandatory in order to improve understanding of class material. Homework will be due the following day when
the bell rings to start class. Homework will be stamped as either completed or not completed. After stamping,
students can get further points by correcting their mistakes while we go over them in class. Here is how those
grades break down.
INCOMPLETE HOMEWORK: 40% if not corrected, 60% if corrected in class.
COMPLETED HOMEWORK: 80% if not corrected, 100% if corrected in class.
Students will be responsible for keeping a log of their homework and will need to have parent
signatures often to ensure that students and parents both can see the progress of the student.
GRADING:
Grades are weighted in this class. Here is how the grades will be weighted:
Assessments
80%
Homework:
20%
The standard school scoring scale will be used in this class. You can find that on Skyward. Spanish 3 and 4 are
two separate classes and thus the grades for these two courses are independent of each other. Each semesters
grade is comprised of the 18-week duration of the semester and thus quarter grades are NOT averaged together
to comprise the semester grade. Grade reports will go out 8 times per year. Progress reports will come out
midway through each academic quarter. In addition to these progress reports First quarter and third quarter
grades will come out as will final semester grades in January and June.
SKYWARD:
Students and parents are encouraged to utilize the Skyward grading module that is available online. This can
be accessed at the school website www.auburn.wednet.edu From this page, click on the Family Access link. If
you do not have an access password, please contact the ARHS Counseling Office at 804-5154 and ask for
information for how to obtain that information. This is really a great way for students to monitor their progress,
and for parents to look at real-time data to know exactly what their childs grade is, and what assignments they
may be missing.
LANGUAGE:
Inappropriate language is not conducive to a healthy classroom environment and will not be tolerated in my
classroom. If you are not sure if something is appropriate or not, DONT SAY IT!!!!
1st offense: Verbal warning student/teacher conference after class.
2nd offense: Student/Teacher contact with parent by phone.

3rd offense: Parent conference.

CHEATING:
The World Languages Department at Auburn Riverside High School has a very stringent policy to discourage
cheating throughout its classes. Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the following:
o Online translation or other forms of plagiarism of a document.
o Copying off of another students test or quiz.
o Copying off of another students homework.
Penalty for cheating is a zero on the work. YOU ARE ALSO GUILTY IF YOU ALLOW ANOTHER PERSON TO
COPY OFF OF YOUR WORK!!!

THIS WILL BE A CLEAN AND

SOBER CLASSROOM!!!
