The population grew steadily until reaching over 3,000 inhabitants by the mid-1700s. Construction began on a stone church in the 1750s, but it was not completed before the Jesuits were expelled from Paraguay in 1767. After the expulsion, the Guarani people who lived at the mission gradually abandoned Jesus de Tavarangue, leaving ruins of the church and cloister.
