Simple squamous

lungs (alveoli)
capillary endothelium
lining of pleural cavity, the pericardium, and
the peritoneum
Bowman's capsule (Kidney)

Mesothelium

Surface view, simple squamous epithelium.

Note contacts of cells. Nuclei are not stained.

Kidney (Glomerulus)

Simple squamous epithelium (arrow) lines the

glomerulus. This is an H & E section and
nuclei are blue.

Simple Cuboidal

follicle of thyroid gland

collecting ducts of kidney
salivary glands
pancreas

Thyroid Gland

The layered spaces are the lumens of follicles

whose walls are composed of simple cuboidal
epithelium.

Simple columnar ("high cuboidal")

gall bladder
surface epithelium of stomach
Uterine glands (all phases)
small intestine

Gall Bladder

Simple columnar epithelium lines the gall

bladder. Note the underlying connective tissue
with blood vessels.

Pseudostratified Epithelium
1. Pseudostratified columnar
male urethra
2. Pseudostratified ciliated columnar
trachea

Trachea

The pseudostratified columnar epithelium of

the trachea is ciliated and has goblet cells

Transitional Epithelium

urinary bladder

Urinary Bladder

The expandible stratified epithelium of the bladder is

referred to as transitional epithelium. Note that its surface
cells are large rather than flattened as in stratified squamous
epithelium.

Urinary Bladder

Surface cells of the bladder are sometimes

binucleate (black arrow). Note the presence of
occasional lymphocytes (blue arrows) in both

Stratified epithelium
1. Stratified squamous
oral (lip)
pharynx
esophagus
anal canal
uterine cervix & vagina
skin (keratinzed)
2. stratified cuboidal
ducts of sweat glands
3. stratified columnar
large excretory duct of salivary glands
parotid
submandibular
sublingual

Esophagus (Upper Third)

The upper third of the esophagus is marked by skeletal muscle.

Esophagus
A closer look shows that the esophagus is lined with stratified
squamous epithelium. Below the muscularis mucosa is visible.

Thick Skin

The stratified squamous (keratinized) epithelium of thick

skin has a very thick layer above compared to thin skin.
A pink (eosinophilic layer) called the stratum lucidum
lies between the epithelium proper and the keratin layer
(stratum corneum).
