CIV2HYD HYDRAULICS
Assignment 4
Answers to the problems are to be handed in by 5.00 pm Monday September 15th.
The assignment is to be placed in the cabinet labelled Hydraulics situated in the entry foyer to
the third floor of the Applied Science 2 building.
The Statement of Authorship must be completed and attached as the cover sheet with this
assignment sheet stapled second and your answers third.
The answers are NOT to be written in pencil. Untidy and difficult to decipher assignments will
not be assessed.
The answers are NOT to be submitted in a folder of any type or in a plastic sheet protector.

Q.1.

Water flows from a very large tank through a 2 inch diameter tube. The liquid in the
manometer is mercury. Find the velocity inside the tube and the flow rate from the tank.
Convert your answer into metric units and state all assumptions made.

Q.2.

A pump draws water through a 20 cm suction pipe and discharges it through a 15 cm pipe
in which the velocity is 4 m/s. The 15 cm pipe discharges horizontally into air at point C.
To what height h above the water surface at A can the water be rasied if 25 kW is deliver
to the pump. Assume that the pump operates at 70% efficiency and that the head loss in

the pipe between A and C is equal to

Q.3.

The mass flow rate of air (A = 1.204 kg/m3) through a 15 cm diameter duct is measured
with a Venturi meter equipped with a water (w = 1000 kg/m3) manometer. The Venturi
throat has a diameter of 6 cm, and the manometer has a maximum differential height of
40 cm. Taking the discharge coefficient to be 0.98, determine the maximum mass flow
rate of air this Venturi meter can measure.
