Novel Unit Book Study


Before we can begin any book club activities, we must figure out how many
pages we will need to read each day to finish the book within the time limit
given in class to read it. To do this, take the number of pages that are in the
book and divide by the number of days we will be working on this unit in
class.
Example: 250 pages/15 days=16.67 pages, so round up to 17 pages!

Day One: Read the book jacket and then begin reading your
assigned pages for today. When you are finished complete the

Prepare for Literature Circle for tomorrow! You must


all select a role to play and get the assigned page
from your teacher.
Literature Circle Roles:
1. Summarizer: As a summarizer, you will be creating a brief
summary of your reading so far. You will be noting the important

points and main ideas of the reading to share and discuss with your
group.
2. Connector: As a connector, you will find connections. These
connections can be between the book and another book, your
personal life or the outside world. Youll be sharing text examples
and your connections during your literature circle meeting.
3. Sketcher: As a sketcher, you will be drawing illustrations (or finding
images elsewhere) that relate to what you are reading. You will be
selecting passages to sketch and then sharing the passages and
sketches with your group.
4. Passage Finder: As the passage finder, you will be selecting a few
special sections from your book that you feel are worth sharing and
discussing with your group. The passages you find may be
memorable, interesting, puzzling, funny or important.
5. Synthesizer: As the synthesizer, you will be evaluating the new
thinking and discoveries you gained from your reading. After listing
new ideas and answering questions, you will discuss your
understandings with your group.

Day 8: LIT CIRCLE ACTIVITIES:

turns participating.
2. Sit close together and get started right away.

3. Listen to understand, ask questions to develop


understanding, speak clearly, build on one anothers ideas,
stay on topic, and provide EVIDENCE of your thinking!

AFTER THE LIT CIRCLE:


1. Complete the debrief worksheet.
***You will need to get both the soft skills rubric and the
debrief worksheet from your teacher. Please note that we
will also be grading you on participation.
2. Read todays assigned pages.

Day Nine: Read todays assigned pages and then prepare


for your teacher conference for tomorrow. This is worth a
total of 25 points.
After you finish reading, get the Conference Preparation Sheet from
your teacher and fill it out. Be prepared to answer other questions
during the reading time tomorrow about this book.

Day Ten: Teacher Conferences happen today! Class


discussion of Book Projects, followed by you reading
todays assigned pages and then beginning to work on
your book projects for this book. You will begin today and then
continue to read and work in class for the next two days, so it should be a
well put together final product. Make sure you also stay focused on the text
and are preparing for your final essay test!
Book Projects: You will need to complete at least 3 of the given
assignments in a row. You may complete a fourth project for extra credit if
youd like. Keep in mind that you will need to present 1 of your projects to
the class! Each project is worth 24 points for a total of 72 points!
