1.Experimental:
Whenyouheatupsomecompoundstheyemitcolourslight.Thisisbecausetheelectronsareabsorbing
energyandgoinguptoahigherelectronshell,whenupinahigherelectronshellitwillwanttogobacktoits
groundstate.Howdoesitdothat?Itshedsenergyinaformoflight,photonsandemitsthematdifferentfrequency,
givingcolourtothephoton.Duringtheactualexperimenttherewasmanydifferentcompoundsandmethanol,the
control.
Methanolwasputonaglassplateandlitbyamatchand,thecolourwasobserved.Thisistoseewhat
controlmethanolburnslike.Soonaftermultiplesaltswereaddedtodiluteinmethanol,whichwerecarefullylititon
fire.Themethanolwouldburnandadifferentcolourflamewouldappear.Afterthemethanolandthesaltwas
burned,theglassplatewaswashedunderwater.Avarietyofcompoundswereusedinthisexperiment,seetable
below.

Observingthedifferentflamecolours,eachchemicalcompoundwhendissolvedinmethanol,the
bluevioletflamewouldappearineachtest.Reasonbeing,methanolproducesabluevioletflame,andineachtesta
certainamountofthesubstancewasadded.Whenthechemicalcompoundwaslit,itwasonlyamatteroftimetill
theflamewentout.Aftertestingthe6chemicalcompoundsanunknownchemicalthatwastested,whichwas
neededtofindoutwhatitwas,byusingtheprevioustests.

Theresultsofthetestareseenaboveintable1.Multipleflamecolourswereemittedfordifferentchemical
compounds.Methanol,assaid,emitsabluevioletcolour,meanwhilewhenLithiumChlorideisaddedtothe
substance,theflamebecomesamagentacolourtillitburnsout.AsforCalciumChloride,CalciumCarbonate,and
PotassiumChloridethechemicalcompoundsemittedabluevioletflamewithsparksoforange.Abrightgreen
flamewasemittedwhenBoraxwasdissolvedinthemethanol.Similartothereaction,Copper(11)Sulfatealso
emittedagreenflamealongwithabluevioletcolour.Lastly,theunknownsubstancewasacombinationofthe
coloursgreen,blueviolet,andyelloworange.

3.Conclusion:
Fromthisexperiment,differentchemicalcompoundsproducedifferentcoloursoflight.Thisisbecause,
whenanelectronabsorbsphotons,itshedsthemoutagain.Whenthedifferentsaltsburned,photonsareemitted,
whichcausesthefrequencyiseitherhigherorlower,determiningthecolor.
TheunknownchemicalcompoundwaspredictedtobeBorax( Na2B4O7 10H 2O ),andtheyelloworange
flamefromCalciumChloride(
CaCl
2).Theflameproducedagreenandyelloworangecolour,&fromthis

observationitwaspredictedthattherehadtobeeitherCopperSulfate(
CuSO
orBorax( Na2B4O7 10H 2O )
4)

becauseofthegreenflame.Howevercopperleftabluecolourstainontheglasstray,andtheunknownsubstance
hadleftawhitestain.
Furtherdirections,willconsistofmoreteststhatwouldbeabletoprovethepredictionoftheunknown
chemicalcompound.TakingdifferentCalciumandChloridecompoundsandseeingtheflamecolouritemitswhen
litwithamatch.TheexperimentwouldalsoincludetestingoutthemixtureofBoraxandCalciumChloridetoseeif
itproducesthesamecoloursintheflameastheunknownchemicalcompound.
