THE BIG PICTURE

_oxidize"L
What is Cellular Respiration?
The process by which the body releases
from the bonds in
to produce cellular .n.rgy intE for* of ATP
This occurs through a series of Re
reactions, whereby the molecuie is
slowly broken down over a number, of steps
Each step in the process occurs through the OX\ )q-\ron sr6 re&.\cA-1on
of a molecule through an enzyme-catalyzed reaction
During many of the reactions, the energy from the giucose is removed and transferred

These molecules shuttle the

from hydrogen atoms
The rnost common of these moiecules is called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide

NAD+ will take electrons from glucose through an enzyme catalyzed reaction
(remember that the electrons come in the form of
)
Remember - rvhat is a hydrogen atom? ,. -, r,
If lrlAD+ is taking electrons, u,hat is happdning to it? ,. l ,- i
If the electrons are coming from glucose, what is happening to it?

The following shows how NAD* is reduced by a reaction in cellular respiration
NAD+ + 2H (atoms) -------+ NADH + H+
Notice that it took the 2 electrons from the hydrogen but only one proton, leaving one
proton behind in the form of an !f t \on
(hydrogen ion is the same as a proton)
The group of enzymes that .urry orrt ttrir pro..sr ur. k ro*n as deh)rdrogenases
NADH will now "carry" these high energy electrons until they are needed at the end

What is AIP?
The whole point of Cellular Respiration is to produce a molecule called
(adenosine triphosphate)
ATP is the
currency for the cell. It powers all of its functions.
AfP is a
of adenine, a pentose sugar, and three phosphate groups
To make ATR we start with
_;
In order to make ATP, ADP must undergo
with
another
group to form ATP (draw diagram).
ATP holds its energy between the
and
phosphate
groups on the molecule, when it is broken off, it will
release the energy into the cell
