Longitudinal Butt Joint:- It is used to join the ends of the plate to get the required diameter of a boiler. Circumferential Lap Joint: - It is used to get the required length of the boiler. Assumption in designing boiler joint: The load on the joint is equally shared by all the rivets. The t is equally distributed over the section of metal between the rivets. The c and in all the rivets is uniform. No b in rivets. Friction between the surfaces of plates is neglected. DESIIGN OF LONGITUDINAL BUTT JOINT FOR A BOILER
1. Thickness of boiler shell or plate thickness (t)=2tl + C
P = Steam pressure D = Internal dia t = tensile stress l = Efficiency of longitudinal joint
Thickness should not less than 7mm. C = Corrosion allowance = 1mm 2. Diameter of rivet (d) = 6 when t is greater than 8mm when t 8 mm for lap joint d = 50 4mm when t 8 mm for single riveted butt joint d = 50 5mm when t 8 mm for double riveted butt joint d = 50 6mm
3. Pitch of rivet (p) = C t + 41.28 mm
pd = 3 + 3 4. Distance between the rows of rivets (pb) = 0.33p + 0.67d pb = 2d 5. Thickness of Butt Strap (t1):- Shall be less than 10mm. t1 = 1.125 t
