Team Red- Predictions

Time for session: 1 hour

Materials:

(Books) Im a Dirty Dinosaur, The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Sticky notes
Coloured pencils
Butchers paper
Word search

Session plan:

Focus will be on predictions

Will firstly read through books with students
Several Post it notes will be covering select words words- Children
are to predict what words will fill in the spaces (represented by the
sticky notes) they will then re-read the books and see whether their
predictions were right or not
Wrap up session with Word search activity

Team Orange- Rhyming

Time for session: 1 hour

Materials:

(Books) Commotion in the Ocean, Wombat Stew

Coloured pencils
Butchers paper
Word search

Session Plan:
20 mins- Wombat Stew/ Commotion in the Ocean
-1 half of the group doing each book. Books will be read to students and
they will be encouraged to participate during stories e.g. Wombat Stew
song
-Rhyming words for Wombat Stew: day, fat, bank, stew, bugs.
- Rhyming words for Commotion in the Ocean: look, grin, sea, proud, bite
Students are given these words and will need to come up with other words
which rhyme with these. Answers will be recorded on the butchers paper.

20mins- Commotion in the Ocean/ Wombat Stew

(Groups swap to book they havent read)

20ish minutes- Word Search

-Word search made up of words from each book will be given to students
to wrap up session.
(If students get less time than this, they can take word search home)

Team Green- Rhyming

Time for session: 1 hour

Materials:

(Green) The Cat in the Hat, Possum Magic

Coloured pencils
Butchers paper
Word search

Session Plan:
-

Talk about types of poems, types of rhymes (e.g. acrostic,

alphabet)
Read through books
Focus words for green group: mat, hand, hook, cake, tail.
Do rhyming activity with students on butchers paper
With the words students brainstorm, kids can then have a go at
writing their own poems; possibly using poetry forms discussed
finish off with word search activity
