Melanie Judd: Long Walk 2015 Action Plan

Strengths:

I have cross-country skied with my family from Charlottes Pass,

along the banks of the Snowy River and up to Mt Kosciusko.
Therefore I have some idea/knowledge of the environment we will
be walking through.
I have some experience in extended hiking trips having done three
trips that have lasted between 1-2 weeks, which gives me
confidence in my ability, as well as a slight insight into what to
expect.
I have experience both creating and eating dehydrated meals and
know what works for me, and what I like to have on trips.
I have a patient/easygoing/happy personality, which will help being
in such a close-knit group for this extended period of time, I am not
easily frustrated and will take most situations in my stride.
I am determined, having had a knee injury early this year, I have
worked hard at rehabilitating it and I want to prove to myself that it
will not prevent me from doing anything.
My family is very supportive and interested in what I am doing and
how they can help, they are great resources for knowledge as they
all have experience in varying aspects of the outdoors and can help
in my preparation for this trip.

Barriers:

Access to a dehydrator to dehydrate meals- I have planned to do

the majority of meal cooking and dehydrating in the Mid-term break
whilst I am home and have access to my parents dehydrator, for
any extra things I have organized to borrow Lucindas dehydrator
whilst back in Bendigo.
Time management- I am juggling work in the holidays along with
assignments for all of my subjects, trips and trying to plan for long
walk. To manage this I am using the below timetable to know
exactly when I need to have each task completed by, I have also
only committed myself to two days of work so as not to put too
much stress on myself.
Personal Fitness- I am not confident in my current fitness and am
worried about how my injured knee will cope on the walk. To help
with this I have been going on regular bike rides with my
housemates, which is strengthening my leg muscles and helping
with aerobic fitness. I am also keeping up with my physio leg
exercises and plan to do a few weighted pack walks before the trip.

People and Resources:

Brothers- I have organized to borrow my eldest brothers single man

tent, which is a good lightweight option, I am also borrowing my
other brothers lightweight stove, which I have used in the past and
is a lighter option than my tangier.

Physio- I am consulting my physio for exercises and ways do best

manage my knee injury both before and throughout the hike.
I am utilizing my parents, as they both have extensive knowledge
regarding extended trips, they know the Kosciusko region well and
can help me with tips and what I should expect. Mum has also done
a lot of dehydrating of food for trips and can help me choose, cook
and dehydrate meals. They also have good lightweight gear that I
can
My housemates are great to drag along whilst I get fit, they are
always up for a bike ride or walk and will keep me motivated in
getting fit.

Assessment Resources:
I have spoken to my Dad (Ken Judd), who works within the East
Gippsland Catchment Management Authority, and has extensive
knowledge, and access to data concerning Introduced flora species
within the Kosciusko and Snowy River regions.
