GENERAL
General
The indicating system provides control and monitoring
of the oxygen source and supply pressures.
The system comprises:
Cylinder Pressure Gage (Direct Reading) It is possible
to check the cylinder pressure by removing the case
assembly of the storage compartment, by reading of
the pressure gage on the cylinder valve assembly.
This reading is intended for the maintenance
personnel to check the cylinder pressure.

LP Indicators
The LP indicators are remotely controlled by the LP
transmitters mounted on the low pressure manifold
in the storage compartment as follows :
Crew LP indicator 4HT/LP transmitter 31HT
Courier LP indicator 49HT/LP transmitter 40HT
They indicate the pressure in the crew and courier
distribution systems. They include colored reading
bands, identified clockwise by the following colors,
Red: 0 to 38 psig, Amber: 38 to 70 psig, Green: 70
to 94 psig, Amber: 94 to 101 psig, Red: over 101

OVERPRESSURE DISCHARGE MANIFOLDS - DISCHARGE

PORT INDICATOR
Each overpressure discharge manifold is provided
within the storage compartment. The oxygen cylinder
overpressure port and overpressure port of the
regulator/transmitter are connected to those safety
discharge manifolds by means of flexible hoses. A
tube leads overpressure oxygen from the manifolds to
the outside through a discharge indicator which is flush
mounted on the fuselage. The discharge indicator
consists of a green blow-out disc which keeps the
discharge tube shut. When subjected to pressure
exceeding 20 psig the green disc blows out and
reveals a yellow colored indication body visible from
outside of the aircraft.

QUICK DONNING MASK

The quick-donning (less than 5 sec) oxygen mask
consists of:
(a)

(b)

(c)

A harness inflated by a manual control lever,

which is used simultaneously to remove the
mask from its housing and inflate the harness
enabling the mask to be donned.
A demand regulator with the three following
functions:
- air (oxygen dilution or 100% pure oxygen
according to altitude).
- 100% oxygen without overpressure.
- 100% oxygen with overpressure.
The first two functions are ensured by the
NORMAL 100% selector with positive locking on
the 100% position, the last one by an emergency
rotation knob (when pressed: intermittent
continuous flow, when turned: continuous flow).
A face piece, which is tightly applied on the face,
and includes a high level dynamic type
microphone with a built-in preamplifier. Oxygen
supply to the mask remains ensured if after
removing the mask assembly from the stowage
box, the LH flap is closed again. In this case, a
white flag with OXY ON indication appears to the
right of the left flap. In this case, oxygen supply
can be turned off when returning the mask to the
stowage box, or even if the mask remains outside
the stowage box, by momentarily moving the
control slide downwards, which prevents the flag
from appearing.

STOWAGE BOX
The stowage box houses the mask with deflated
harness and smoke goggles. It comprises:
A connector enabling connection of the flexible hose for
oxygen supply to the mask.
A two flap door maintaining the mask in its housing. The
left flap is provided with a sliding control for operating
an ON/OFF supply valve which releases oxygen to the
mask regulator when the LH flap is opened. During
restowing of the mask, it is necessary to pull on the
sliding control to reset the ON/OFF valve in the OFF
position. A white flag, marked OXYGEN, on the sliding
control protrudes, thus preventing restowing of the
mask with the valve in ON position. A rigid stainless
steel tube connected to the pneumatic ON/OFF supply
valve assembly. The supply valve assembly
incorporates connector(a). A blinker flowmeter which
flashes when oxygen is flowing. A precoiled flexible
hose for oxygen supply connected to the valve, the free
end of which includes a quick-disconnect connection
with self-sealing coupling for connection to the relevant
supply pipe of the mask regulator.
A microphone lead tied to the oxygen flexible hose by
ties and connected at one of its ends to a connector
mounted on the box and enabling connection to the
aircraft network; the other end is provided with ; quickdisconnect positive locking connector for connection to
the relevant mask microphone supply cable.

EMERGENCY OXYGEN
Lavatory Emergency Oxygen
The chemical oxygen generator is a sodium-chlorate
core installed in a stainless-steel housing. A thermal
insulating material is used between the core and the
housing. The chemical generator actuator is a springloaded striker and a percussion cap installed at one
end of the housing. A pull-pin holds the striker away
from the cap. A lanyard connects the pull-pin to the
oxygen mask. A filter assembly is installed in the outlet
end of the housing to prevent contamination of the
oxygen supply. A flexible hose connects the oxygen
mask to the outlet manifold. The oxygen mask gets its
oxygen supply from the outlet. The outlet is installed
on the housing. A relief valve is installed at the outlet
end of the housing. This will prevent a high pressure
build-up if a failure of the outlet valve occurs. A
temperature sensitive indicator tape is installed on the
housing. The process of generating oxygen creates a
fairly high temperature, this causes the indicator tape
to change color from yellow to black. A black indicator
tape signals that this chemical oxygen generator has
been used. The oxygen mask is a face cone with a
reservoir bag attached. The inhale, exhale and diluter
valves are installed the face cone. A flow indicator is
installed in the flexible hose connected to the oxygen
mask. The flow indicator will show a green stripe when
there is an oxygen flow.

The electrical door latch assembly holds the door

of the emergency oxygen container closed.
Spring pressure will open the door when the
electrical latch assembly is electrically released.
A door stop is installed in the emergency oxygen
container to permit the inspection and testing for
the emergency oxygen container. The door stop
is turned through 90 degrees to permit the door
to open a few degrees and will prevent the mask
from falling out. The door can be opened
manually with a release tool, via an access hole
to release the electrical latch assembly.
The altitude switch closes when the cabin
pressure drops to a pressure equivalent of 14000
+0/ -500 ft. This operates the emergency oxygen
supply system.
The MAN OVRD pushbutton switch (14WR)
serves as a backup or override for the altitude
switching circuit. A safety guard is fitted over the
switch.

PORTABLE OXYGEN CYLINDER

The oxygen source consists of a high pressure oxygen
cylinder. The cylinder is located in the flight
compartment and held in place by quick-release
brackets. The cylinder has a capacity of 11 cu.ft.
charged to 1800 psig at 21C (70F). The cylinder is
equipped with a valve assembly including the following
components:
(1) A direct reading pressure gage indicating the
cylinder pressure.

(6)

A low pressure relief valve with a check valve

calibrated to limit all excessive pressure between
90 psig -beginning of opening and 135 psig -fully
open.

(7)

A demand regulator enabling an oxygen flow,

generated by the negative pressure in the oxygen
mask during the inhalation phase, to be obtained
from a standard supply point.

(8)

A constant flow outlet, not to be used by the flight

crew.

(2) A high pressure relief valve, with a safety burst

disc in case overpressure occurs in the cylinder
due to abnormal rise of temperature. The pressure
limit is 2700 to 3000 psig.
(3) A rotating type ON/OFF valve which controls the
oxygen flow entering the high pressure chamber
of the pressure regulation mechanism.
(4) A charging valve directly connected to the high
pressure chamber of the pressure regulation
mechanism and which enables the cylinder to be
filled through the ON/OFF valve with a controlled
flow. The charging speed must not exceed 300
psi/min.
(5) A pressure control mechanism which ensures
pressure regulation to a pressure between 35 and
85 psig.

PROTECTIVE BREATHING HOOD

In the event of fire, smoke or noxious gas emission, a
flight crew member uses the protective breathing
equipment. The protective breathing hood equipment
works with a semi-closed circuit. As soon as the "Pull
to Activate" ring is disengaged from the unit, low
pressure oxygen is produced by an oxygen generator.
Oxygen flows from the generator into a venturi nozzle
and mixes with the hood gases while it induces the
flow through the CO2 scrubber.
