Claude Monet

Background
Claude Monet was born on November 14, 1840 in Paris, France
His family moved to Le Havre, Normandy, France
Monets Father wanted Claude to join the family grocery business, but he wanted to
become and artist

His mother died in 1857 when he was only 16 years old


He moved in with his Aunt Marie-Jeanne Lecadre

One of the models he used for a painting, Camille Doncieux, gave birth to their
first child, Jean in 1867.
The two married in 1880

Artistic Influence
Drawing caricatures of his teachers was an early habit of his during
Admission into Le Havre Secondary School proclaimed Monets start of his art
career
Charcoal drawings were his favorite things during the beginning of career

Monet frequently took trips into Paris to visit Le Louvre


Seeing students painting alongside their masters, he brought his own paints and painted what he
saw outside of the windows

When he was 22 he took classes under Charles Gleyre


Some of his classmates included Renoir, Bazille, and Degas
