Excursion Project

By Janina Tao

You must provide details about the:

Destination:

An actual event in Melbourne. Will students be

observing or performing? Will it be run by the event
(an MSO school day) or are you running it (a trip to
watch a formal performance)?
The event I have chosen is Hansel & Gretel and The Tale of
Peter Rabbit for the Year 7 students to observe. It is held in
the Melbourne Recital Centres Elizabeth Murdoch Hall on 31
Sturt St, Southbank VIC 3006.
Name of the contact person.
The Art Recital Centres Box office.
Specific start/finish times.
Thursday 16th of January 2015 at 11am 11.45am (45
minutes)
Bag/instrument storage? Eating spaces?
Students bags can be stored in the Cloakroom located on
ground level. After the musicplay, students will take their
bags along with them and sit at the Park/grass area behind the
National Gallery of Victoria to have their packed lunches.

School paperwork and issues specific to your school:

Risk assessment. Submit the actual, completed

document.
The school does not have a risk assessment.
Lead times. How long before the excursion date do you
need to submit the application?
At least 4 weeks prior to the planned excursion/incursion.
Excursion template. (from your school with the
excursion co-ordinators name)
The schools excursion/incursion application form has been
completed and is attached to this assessment.
Transport/excursion costings. From whose budget?
Tickets are $23.00 for standard and child admissions. As we
are having 42 students maximum and four staffing members,
the price concludes to $1058.00. Our means of transportation
will be a bus through Moreland Bus services. The total cost of
this is $400.00. The Performing Arts budget (shared between
three campuses) can approve $500.00 for the excursion.

Which bus company? How many does the bus hold? Will
it fit your group? Are there bays for instrument
transportation?
Hume Central Secondary College hire Moreland Bus and
Coaches for excursions, sporting events and school camps.
They provide buses with 57 seats that will cater for our 42
Year 7 students and four staff members. We will not need bays
for instrument transportation as we are observing a musicplay.
Timetabling issues for students/staff. (use real timings)
Chosen staff will list the classes they need covering in the
HCSC Excursion/incursion Application form and the students
will list the classes they will be missing in the HCSC
Excursion/incursion Student Planning Sheet.
Staffing numbers and extra helpers. What are the
ratios of qualified staff to students? How do you
organise time away for these teachers?
The ratio will be one teacher (that is affected by absent
students)/canteen staff/Pre-service teacher to every 10
students which concludes to four staff members altogether
including myself. According to the Student Excursion/Incursion
Policy, I will organise time away for the chosen staff one week
prior to the excursion.
Can you use Parent helpers? Do they need working
with children checks?
Parent helpers are not applicable in the Student
Excursion/Incursion Policy.
First Aid. Which staff members are qualified? Who
carries the first aid kit? How many kits are required?
What should be/is in them? Are there students with
special needs? How are they catered for? Where are
the epipens, asthma inhalers etc?
One staff member participating in the excursion must be
qualified and carry at least one First Aid kit. Data from Hume
Central Secondary College show that there are two students in
the chosen Year 7 classes that have special needs. The first
aid kit should contain basic items such as bandages,
dressings, tapes, a thermal blanket, gloves, resuscitation
masks and special needs items such as a spare asthma
inhaler.
What is the process for dealing with non-presentation
of Permission forms? Eg: a student arrives at the bus
and hasnt submitted a form. She says Mum said I
could go You know her, you know her mum and its
probably ok what is the school policy?
Students are only permitted to participate in an excursion
provided they have written parent consent and the approval of

the class teachers, team leader or coordinator on the HCSC

Student Planning Sheet.
Parent letter: (write and submit your own dummy copy, or a
completed school template copy if they have one.)
The school has a template that I have completed. It is included in
this assessment as an attachment.

Curriculum reasoning

What is the pedagogical reason for the students going

on this excursion?
The musicplay will enhance the learning of the instruments in
the orchestra that Year 7 students have learnt prior to the
concert, told through a classic fairy tale.
Is there any multi-disciplinary relevance?
Literacy, The Performing Arts
What preparation/follow up work will be required?
The orchestral score will produce the expressive aspects in the
musicplay. This will lead Year 7 students to analyse the
elements used such as dynamics, articulation, tempo choices
and tone colour that create certain moods within the play.
