METHODS OF TEACHING

GRAMMAR-TRANSLATION METHOD
DIRECT METHOD
BI-LINGUAL METHOD

Grammar-Translation
Method/Classical Method
It is the oldest method, which
was used to teach classical languages like
Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, Persian etc.. The
originator of this method was German scholar
called
J. V.Meidinger. J.C.Frick wrote its
first course book in 1793.Champion .H. says
under this method , the meaning of English
words, phrases and sentences is taught by
means of word-for-word translation into the
Mother tongue.

ADVANTAGES
1.It enriches the learners Vocabulary more
easily.
2.Word meanings can be learnt clearly.
3.Correct knowledge of the grammar is
insisted.
4.Less teaching-learning aids are required.
5.Interest in the art of translation can be
developed.
6.Successfully used in a crowded class.
7.It save time, effort and give meaning more

DISADVANTAGES
1.Not easy to keep all the learners active
listeners.
2.Less chance for creative and imaginative
thinking.
3.Pronounciation, Stress and intonation
(phonetic aspect) are not emphasised.
4.Silent reading and sub-skills of reading
are likely to be neglected.

DIRECT METHOD
The Direct Method was evolved in 1901 in France.
Its principles were adopted from Germany. Pendergast
and Sauveur was proposed a method called the Natural
Method also known in other different names-Psychologist
Method, Reform Method, Phoneme Method etc .. Later it
became popular as the Direct Method.France, Germany
and the USA adopted this method as it helped to
accelerate trade, commerce, industry and travel. It was
introduction to India in the 20th Century.Central idea of
Direct Method is- association of words and sentences with
their meanings through demonstration.Direct Method was
evolved on close observation of hoe children learn their
Mother tongue.

ADVANTAGES
1.Emphasises oral and speech practice,
right pronunciation, Stress etc..
2.It make direct association (bond) between
thought and expression.
3.It makes learning easy and pleasant.
4.It can help cover more content in less
time.
5.It is more suitable to teach idioms.

DISADVANTAGES
1.It gives over emphasis to oral work.
2.Less effective for average/ below
average students.
3.Expensive/hard in respect of
teaching aids.
4.Course book / Source book may not
be available as required.

BI-LINGUAL METHOD
It was evolved by C.J.Dodson.
This method make use of the first
language in learning the second. In
this language Mother tongue is used
only by the teacher not by the
students and the use of Mother tongue
by the teacher gradually gets reduced
in higher classes.

ADVANTAGES
1.The teacher can save time as the
mother tongue is used.
2.An average teacher can use this
method in the class.
3.It is economical, as use of teaching
aids is minimum.
4.Mother Tongue acquisition rules are
helpful in this method.

DISADVANTAGES
1. This method is not at all desirable
or applicable in higher classes.
2. If the linguistic features of the two
languages are entirely different this
method will create confusion
amongst the students.
