The Grammar Translation Method (GTM) is a
teaching method commonly used to teach
grammar with the main characteristics focusing on
translation and memorizing verb forms.
Grammar-Translation Method
The Grammar-Translation method is
not a new method. This method goes
by many names, but has been widely
used by language teachers for many
years. In the past, this method was
called the classical method since it was
first used in teaching classical
languages such as Latin and Greek
(Chastain, 1988). At the beginning of
this century, this method was used to
assist students in reading and
appreciating foreign literature.
Grammar-Translation method The
fundamental goal of learning a foreign
language is to be able to read written
literature in that foreign language. To do
so, students need to learn the grammar
rules and vocabulary of the target
language. In addition, many people
believe that learning a foreign language
will help improve their brain.
The advantages of the Grammar-Translation Method are:

1. Develop students' skills and abilities in reading, writing

and translating foreign language literature

2. Facilitate students in learning foreign languages because

they are allowed to use their mother tongue (native
language) in the process of teaching the language. Using
this method, young children connect unfamiliar words so
that strong memory bonds can be formed
Disadvantages of the Grammar-Translation Method:
1. This method focuses on reading and writing skills, ignoring listening
and speaking skills.
2. This method cannot realize its goal in getting students to write
correctly.
3. This method is only suitable for smart students.
4. This method requires students to think in the foreign language of
their mother tongue, then that thought is translated into their brain,
namely into the target language.
5.This method occurs unconsciously, it hinders the speed of language
teaching.
6. This method makes/makes the teacher lazy.
7. The teacher's role in this method is easy, if he masters a foreign
language.
