John Wesley (1703-1791)
 Anglican minister who served not only in
England but also in U.S.—Georgia
 His experience in the US was very
difficult for him and he returned to
England
 Was basically burned out
 Came into contact with Moravians
 “Felt my heart strangely warmed”
1739 Wesley breaks with
Anglican Church
 Wesley was concerned with people who were
not in church and who were lost to their sins
 Began preaching outside of the church
 Realized that trained and ordained clergy
were not the only people called to ministry so
he created lay preachers
 Led to success of Methodist Church in
England and US
Wesley’s Beliefs
 Bible is central
 All people are capable of being saved
by their faith in Christ
 Christians can be made perfect in love
 Believers motives instead of being self
centered were guided by a deep desire
to please God
 Regard for others and welfare first.
