EXPERIMENT NO. 1
THE VERNIER AND MICROMETER CALIPERS
ABSTRACT
Measurement is an essential part of our everyday life. In this experiment, the dimensions of geometric
shapes involving a metallic copper cube, a steel washer, and a glass marble were used to gain insight into
making and reporting accurate measurements with proper significant figures with the use of Vernier and
Micrometer Calipers. First, the mass of the objects was measured using a triple beam balance. Using the
Vernier Caliper, the dimensions of the metallic copper cube and steel washer were obtained. With these values,
the group computed the volume and density of the objects and compared them to the standard value by
computing the percentage error. For the second part of the experiment, the dimensions of the metallic copper
cube and glass marble were measured, but this time using a micrometer caliper. The volume, density, and
percentage error were also computed. Based on the data gathered, the micrometer caliper gives more
accurate measurements that the Vernier Caliper.
Question and Answer:
1. Differentiate the Vernier and Micrometer scales.
Both the Vernier and Micrometer Scales are used in measurements of the dimensions of objects;

3. State some of rhe errors that one might make in measuring length using both the Vernier and
micrometer callipers.
In Vernier callipers, some start their measurement on the edge of the internal jaw instead of 0.
In micrometer caliper, some tend to use 2 decimal places only, when it should always be 3 decimal
places since an additional uncertain digit is always added at the end of the circular scale reading.
Most people also make mistakes on reading where the main scale and vernier scale have vertical line
alignment.
Some also have errors on the positioning of the object to be measured on the vernier and micrometer
callipers.
4. Determine the percentage error for an observed value of 1.112 x 10 -5 if the standard value is 1.117 X
