Problem Statement 1

Industrial emissions have been releasing chemicals that can cause acid rain. Acid rain is
destructive to ecosystems and can be harmful to the organisms that live there. Recently,
awareness about this major environmental issue has been spreading, but the general public is
poorly informed. First, create a model to explain how acid rain forms.

Dataset 1
What factors contribute
to acid rain?

How do the chemicals

that form acid rain end
up in the atmosphere or
water cycle?

List three specific ways

organisms are effected.

1.

2.

3.

Sketch a rough draft of how acid rain forms and effects organisms in the
environment below.

Comprehension Questions
a. What should your model represent?

b. Why is a model needed?

c. Who is your intended audience?

d. What are some things you need to consider before starting?

e. What method will you use to display your model?

Problem Statement 2
Acid rain is a major problem effecting ecosystems worldwide. Environmentalist and politicians
are now trying to find a way to prevent or neutralize acid rain. Revise your model to include a
method to protect organisms and their habitats from acid rain. Insert your design into the
current model

Dataset 2
How are acids neutralized
in the lab?

How do scientists protect

themselves from acids?

How could these be used

in the environment?

Where would your design

fit into your current
model?

Draw a sketch of your plan below.
