SUMMARY
BLACK-FIGURED CHOUS FROM CLASSICAL SALAMIS

The chous comes from a building of the Classical town of Salamis and
belongs to the category of black-figured vases produced in Athens in the first
half of the 5th century B.C. The chous is related to the Anthesteria, the last of
the winter celebrations in honour of Dionysos, and most likely belongs to a
child.
On the main side of the vase, a Satyr dances in front of a small wreathed
chous. The inscription , on the right, is very important since it is
very rare on black-figured choes. However, it is not straightforward whether
the inscription refers to the Satyr, to the content or to the owner of the vase.
