Current Literacy Challenges
There are several challenges in the world today that affect humanitys literacy. The
technology we have, while useful in certain situations, can be detrimental to our level of literacy.
Technology that affects todays literacy includes but is not limited to smartphones, computers,
and television.
Devices such as smartphones and computers have given us great advantages when it
comes to research. They allow us to have access to any amount of information that we want at
the touch of a button. This is great for people that have to do immense amounts of research.
However it prevents people form learning how to do in-depth research using books such as
encyclopedias and the like. This a problem because if there is, for any reason, a power outage or
break in internet service, these resources become unusable.
Television is detrimental to the literacy of the nation. People are spending hours every
day watching television shows that provide little to no mental stimulation. This is terrible for
todays generations because their intellectual drive is being wasted away staring at screens for
hours. These hours could be spent doing things such as studying or researching things that could
lead to solutions to the worlds problems.
