IFUGAO

By Joanne Senia
Inhabitants of the known earth
Ipugao is what we call ourselves since birth
191,078 in number
Located in the Cordillera Region
Big in size
So divided into 6 we were
Banaue, Bunhran, Mayayao,
Halipan, Hapao and Kiangang
Revive traditional rice planting:
Harvesting, synchronized lot preparation
To manage rice pests effectively
These are our practices
Numerous deities we have
Yet Mahnongan is our supreme god
The creator and destroyer of entities
Filled with great glory and respect
Showing love for the dead
Is the affluent ritual called Bogwa
Wherein bones are exhumed and cleaned
And returned to lubuk afterwards
Colonialism passed us by
Yet still left untouched
The practice of narrative literature
And woodcarving is our proof
See for yourselves the wonder
Of the renowned Banaue Rice Terraces
Molded by our bare hands
Distinguished by UNESCO
Amidst worlds modernization
Strong and united we are
Culture and tradition seem what they are yesterday
Thus, for today and endless tomorrows
