The main objective of this prototype project in Electronics 2 laboratory is to design a power
audio amplifier with an output power of at least 80 Watts. And in this project, a power supply is
needed to produce an output voltage since a preamplifier was present in the circuit. Also, the project
consists of two stages; Class AB push-pull power amplifier as the main amplifier and a class A
common emitter as the preamplifier.
So for the first stage, a preamplifier was used. A preamplifier is an electronic amplifier that
is used for amplification of a very low signal, and then transmitting it to a main amplifier. It is
responsible for processing the signal in order for it to be exact or fit to the next stage or the main
amplifier. And also, it was designed to increase the gain of the amplifier, to lower the output
impedance, and responsible for converting unbalanced output to a balanced output. And as stated
earlier, a common emitter transistor amplifier was used since it can provide a high gain for the
amplifier.
And for the second stage of the power audio amplifier, a Class AB power amplifier was used
and it is one of the commonly used. As its name implies, Class AB amplifier is an amplifier that is
in between the Class A amplifier and Class B amplifier, and it can also implies that it is the
combination of the said types of amplifiers. And also, Class AB amplifiers have better efficiency
and poorer fidelity than class A amplifiers. They are used when the output signal need not be a
complete reproduction of the input signal, but both positive and negative portions of the input signal
must be available at the output.
Lastly, a push-pull amplifier is used to avoid cross-over distortion of the signal to be amplified. It
is composed of 2 Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJT), one of which is an N-channel transistor and
the other one is a P-channel Transistor.
