Structure and functions of biomolecules Class/Period: 6Th

and the role they play in life.
Date: Week 10.12- 10.16
Essential Question:
How can we investigate the structure and function of biomolecules and the role they play in life?

Questions:
Bio chemistry
Polarity
Cohesion
Adhesion
Solvent

1) What do hydrogen
bonds form?
2) What is the formula
for solution?
3) What does the
equation above
mean?
4) What is a Ph scale?
5) Give 4 differences
in basic and acids and
2 similarities?

Notes:
The study chemical compounds and process occurring in
organisms.
How equally bonding electrons are shared between atoms
Hydrogen bonds between molecules
Attraction between molecules of different substances
Dissolves mixtures
What gets dissolved

Surface tension: where molecules start to connect ( looks like a

fence )
Solvent + solute=solution
A solvent dissolves the solute (compound element) to form a
solution- when the solute and solvent completely mix into one
Scale determining if an item is acidic or not ranges1 through 14.
7 being neutral. 1-6 is acidic and 8-14 is basic.
Acidic and basic solutions are both found in foods. Not only that,
but they both formed with a solvent and a solute. The difference
is that acidic ranges on the scale 1 through 6 and basic ranges
from 8 to 14. Acidic have sour taste and bases have a bitter
taste. Acids react with basics and basic react with acids. Acids
give proton H+ and basics take protons H+

Summary
This week we learned that cohesion is when hydrogen bonds connect. Adhesion is when
different substances attract to one. We also learned that solvent and a solute make a
solution. A solvent is what dissolves the solute to make a solution one new one.

Solutions fall under a pH scale to determine whether or not its acid or not. Acids range
from 1-6 and basic ranged 8 to 14 7 being neutral.
