    The 30-year civil war in Sri Lanka involved four Eelam wars between 1983 and 2009. Key events included the Black July pogrom in 1983 that killed 2,500 Tamils and major terrorist attacks throughout the war including the Central Bank bombing in 1996 that killed 91 people. The Sri Lankan armed forces were led by different presidents over the four wars. They ultimately defeated the LTTE in May 2009, ending the conventional military capabilities of the terrorist group and bringing the 30-year conflict to a close.
