1. Scope
This procedure describes the visual and dimensional inspection of the silos at the Jansens & Dieperink shop.
2. Equipment
2.1
Visual inspection
2.2
a)
b)
c)
d)
Dimensional inspection
Aluminium bar (length = diameter of silo/2)
Tape-measure (length = min. silo length)
Bevel gauge
Thin rope
3. Personnel
The inspections will be carried out by a qualified representative of J&D, in accordance with ASME SEC V,
article 9, T-922 Personnel Requirements. If required by ITP, the inspections will be witnessed by a
representative of SKEC and/or NSRP and/or Third Party.
4. Preparation
a)
b)
c)
d)
Tools, machines and stainless steel grit inside the silo need to be removed.
A proper access to the silo via scaffolding and/or ladder(s) needs to be prepared.
Halogen light or flashlight for inside inspection needs to be available.
All required equipment needs to be inside or near the silo.
5. Inspection
5.1
Visual inspection
a) For the general inspection procedure, refer to the Site Inspection Procedure.
b) Goal: The visual inspection is to verify the quality of the welding relevant to the operational use of
the silo, the inside surface of the complete silo and the quality of all nozzles and welded
appurtenances, in accordance to the acceptance criteria mentioned in chapter 6..
c) Requirements: The visual inspection meets the essential variables of a Visual Examination
Procedure in accordance with ASME SEC V, article 9; The visual inspection is conducted with the
Direct Visual Examination technique by qualified J&D personnel under a minimum light intensity of
1000 Lux, as described in ASME SEC V, article 9, T-952 Direct Visual examination.
5.2
Dimensional inspection
a) For the general inspection procedure, refer to the Site Inspection Procedure.
b) During the dimensional inspection different parts/sections of the silo will be measured and
compared with the actual drawings and tolerances mentioned in chapter 6.

6.1.1 Undercut
Intermittent undercutting is accepted, provided that:
a) Material equal to or greater than 3/16 in. [5 mm] and less than 1 in. [25mm] -> 1/32 in. [1mm]
b) Material equal to or greater than 1 in. [25mm] -> 1/16 in. [2mm]
c) 1/16 in. [2mm] is permitted for an accumulated length of 2 in. [50mm] in any 12 in. [300mm] in
material greater than in. [12mm]
6.1.2 Underfill
Applies to penetration and reinforcing beads of the complete joint penetration groove welds.
a) Reinforcement shall not exceed 1/8 in. [3mm] in height and shall have a gradual transition to the
plane of base metal surface. Individual passes on multiple pass welds shall be transitioned into
previous passes in such a way as to avoid coarse ripples, and abrupt ridges and valleys.
6.1.3 Scratch or burn marks
a) Maximum depth = 15% of minimum base metal thickness
6.1.4 Fillet weld throat
a) Maximum convexity = 20% of theoretical throat.
b) Concavity = Permissible only if required throat depth is maintained.
6.1.5 Cracks or Pinholes
a) For all welds significant for the proper operational use of the silo, cracks or pinholes are not
allowed.

7. Discontinuity
In case a discontinuity has been found and exceeds the acceptance criteria as stated above or in case a
measured dimension exceeds the tolerances mentioned above, next actions will be taken:
a) A punch list will be made and signed by all parties.
b) If the discontinuity involves major repairing or modifications, J&D and SKEC will verify if the
discontinuity has any influence on any further construction activity or proper operational use of the
silo.
c) In case the discontinuity has been found acceptable by both parties, the punch list will be signed off
without any repairing or modification.
d) In case the discontinuity is not acceptable, J&D will repair/modify the item according the Repair
Procedure.
e) J&Ds site supervisor will formally notify SKEC for the new inspection date (according to the PIM
agreed time). In case of shop inspection new inspection date will be discussed with SKEC.
f) The inspection of the items on the punch list will be performed by the same representatives of J&D,
SKEC and, if applicable, the third party and/or NSRP, as with the original inspection in one session
on the agreed date for the punch list items only.
g) If the items on the punch list are approved by all parties, then all parties will sign off the punch list
and ITP for acceptance.
h) Regarding issue of Nonconformity report (NCR), it will be controlled according clients procedure.
8. Reporting
a) Upon completion and approval of the inspection all parties will sign off the item on the ITP as well
as the inspection report.
b) The inspection date mentioned in the notification given to SKEC will be used as completion date,
not the date of signature from SKEC, third party or NSRP.
c) Any delay caused by not signing off the required documents in time, J&D will inform SKEC.
