ASSINGMENT 3

1. A solid circular shaft of 150 mm diameter is machined down to a diameter of 75 mm along a part
of the shaft. If, at the transition point of the two diameters, the fillet radius is 12 mm, what
maximum shear stress is developed when a torque of 2700 N.m is applied to the shaft? What will
the maximum shear stress be if the fillet radius is reduced to 3 mm.
2. The small gear of an internal gear train is powered by a 500-kW motor at 30Hz. Whereas this
small gear has 10 teeth, the large gear it drives has 30. Hence the large gear rotates at 10 Hz. If
the allowable shear stress is 60MPa. What are required sizes of the shafts?
3. What must be the length of a 6-mm-daimeter aluminum wire so that it could be twisted through
one complete revolution without exceeding a shear stress of 42 MPa? G= 27 GPa.
4. Two gears attached to two 60-mm-daimeter steel shafts, as shown in the figure1. The gear at B
has a 200-mm pitch diameter; the gear at C, a 400-mm pitch diameter. Through what angle will
end A turn if at A a torque of 600N.m is applied and end D of the second shaft is prevented from
rotating? G=84 GPa.

5. A thin circular disk with a mass m= 2kg is attached to a 500-mm-long vertical shaft extending
from a fixed end at the top , as shown in the figure 2.
(a) If the shaft is made of steel (G=83 MPa) and is 24mm in diameter, what is the frequency of
torsional vibration of the system? the equation for the fundamental frequency of vibration
fn = (1/2)((kt / Imz )^0.5) Where the mass moment of inertia of the disc about the Z-axis
Imz =mR2 /2.
(b) What would be the required diameter of the shat to develop the same frequency of the
vibration if the it were made from an aluminum alloy (G = 26 GPa)?

6. A thin-walled elastic frustum of a cone has the dimensions shown in the figure3..
(a) Determine the torsional stiffness of this member (i.e., the magnitude of torque per unit angle
of twist). The shearing modulus for the material is G.
(b) What is the torisional flexibility of this member?

7. The solid cylinder shaft of variable size, as shown in mm on the figure 4, is acted upon by the
torques indicated. What is the maximum torsional stress in the shaft, and between what two
pulleys does it occur?

8. A 100-mm-daimeter core of 50 mm radius is bored out from a 200-mm-daimeter solid circular

shaft. What percentage of the torisional strength is lost by this operation?
