OSEA LUNCH & LEARN SEMINAR SERIES

So You Think You

Can Teach? Series
Returns for Second
Year
The second year of So You
Think You Can Teach?
began on Tuesday, August
25. The weekly professional
development series
was developed last
school year by the
Ohio University
Lancaster Campus
Chapter of the Ohio
Student Education
Association for
education students
on campus. The idea behind
the workshops is to make
sure that teacher
candidates on campus are

FALL SEMESTER 2015

prepared for the real world

upon graduation.
We are thrilled that the
series was such a hit last
year with students, said
OSEA Advisor Terri Green.
We look forward to the
opportunities this years
workshops will bring.

President Roderick McDavis, Sharon

Scheidegger and Assistant Dean of
Student Affairs, Maureen Coon,
present OSEA members Abby Brown,
Rachel Longnecker, and Crystal
Wood with award along with advisors
Debra Dunning and Terri Green.

OSEA won an Outstanding

Programming Award given
by Ohio University last spring
during the 32nd Annual
Leadership Awards Gala in
Athens. The leadership
awards gala celebrated the
theme Inspire. Sponsored
by the Division of Student
Affairs in collaboration with
the Career and
Leadership
Development Center
(CLDC) and Event
Services, this annual
tradition of Bobcat Pride
provided an opportunity
to applaud OHIOs
students and their
outstanding demonstration
of the Universitys five core

commitment, civility,
community and
citizenship.
During the 2015-16
academic year, the
workshops will be held
every Tuesday from 11
a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in
Brasee Hall room 414. The
workshops are held during
the lunch hour, and
students are encouraged
to bring their lunch with
them to eat during the
sessions.
Education professionals
from Lancaster and
surrounding communities
speak at the sessions to
share their knowledge
and expertise with OUL
students. The relationship
formed between OUL
OSEA education students
and community school
leaders during the
workshops has opened the
door to many opportunities
for students to volunteer in
local school
districts. Students then gain
valuable experience
working in the classroom.

President of OSEA at OUL Attends National Conference

The president of the Lancaster Campus Ohio Student
Education Association (OSEA) recently returned from the
National Education Associations Student Leadership
Conference in Orlando, Florida. Rachel Longnecker is the
Southeast Representative on the Ohio Student Education
Association Board and attended the conference to make
professional connections and learn ways to help grow the
OSEA chapter at Ohio University Lancaster.
I attended three sessions, said Longnecker. A session
called Outreach to Teach Turned Organizing gave me
many ideas for projects our OSEA can do to become one
with the community. It also gave me fundraising and
volunteer ideas.
The conference was held from June 28 to July 1. Longnecker
got the opportunity to network with other students from
across the United States. She also met and spoke with
leaders of the national organization.
I got to meet the president, Lily Eskelsen Garcia, and she
was a powerful speaker, said Longnecker. She talked
about how we, as students, should voice our thoughts on the
political issues in education and gave us ways to do so.
Along with the chance to
be a part of IGM, OSEA
members also receive many
National Education
Association (NEA) member
benefits.

OU-Ls very own Dr. Paul
Young spoke about
College Survival Skills on
September 1st. The
presentation was extremely
helpful to college students
due to the emphasis on grit
and a growth mindset. Dr.
Young explained that grit
consists of passion and
perseverance (G-growth, Rresilience, I-integrity, Ttenacity). OU-L desires to

develop quality educators

that are passionate about
their careers and have the
perseverance to withstand
obstacles along the way. He
also explained that we must
have a growth mindset over
a fixed mindset. If we are
able to instill the importance
of grit in our own
educational experiences,
we will be more prepared to
assist our students in their
educational growth as well.

Led by Professor Terri Green,
Lunch & Learn held an
interactive meeting on
September 8th. Our
involvement with

surrounding schools provides

an opportunity for us to learn
and grow as educators;
furthermore, we must
understand the importance
of our conduct while being
guests in a classroom.
Professor Green posted 10
posters around the room:
You are a Guest,
Observe, Watch and
Learn, Be Positive, Be
Professional, Be Careful,
Be Prepared,
Personal/Professional
Relationships, Teaching is
Hard Work, and Build
Relationships. As partnered
groups circulated the room,
we were able to collaborate
and build upon one
anothers ideas. This
constructive activity
provided much guidance in
ways that we can put our
best foot forward when
representing ourselves, OU-L,
and our education program.

Kevin Snyder, Lancaster City
Schools (LCS) technology
advisor, spoke to OSEA
about technology in the
classroom. It was exciting to
hear all the ways that LCS is
working to incorporate more
technology into their
classrooms. LCS was one of
the few districts in Ohio that
did all state testing online
last year (academic year
2014-15). LCS is also looking
into spending textbook
budgets on electronic
programs. Kevin Snyder

reminded us that students

will only learn how to use
technology if they are
frequently using it. In
addition, its not about the
technological involvements
that the teacher has, but
rather, what access to
technology the students are
having. Technology is an
excellent medium to
conduct education through
project-based learning, realworld connections, and 1-1
instruction.

Association for the

Education of Young Children
(NAEYC) and Dru Tomlin
presented on the
Association for Middle Level
Education (AMLE). OSEA is
looking forward to
establishing student
associations that will be
connected with the NAEYC
and AMLE in order to better
educate and grow our
education majors.

On October sixth, the Ohio

Student Education
Association (OSEA) had the
pleasure of hosting Granville
Elementary principal, Travis
Morris. As an Ohio UniversityLancaster (OU-L) graduate
himself, Travis Morris spoke of
his great experiences and
opportunities at OU-L. He
went on to explain his
journey from an OU-L
graduate to a sixth grade
teacher in Lancaster (20052006), a sixth grade teacher
in Granville (2006-2013),
assistant principal at
Granville Elementary (20132014), and Granville
Elementary principal (2014
to present). The presentation
included methods that
Granville has instituted
relating to curriculum,
assessment, and instruction,
with student learning at the
heart of it all. He also

Lunch and Learn hosted

Lynn Davis, who spoke to
OSEA about teachers and
the law. She spoke about
the Ohio Education
Associations (OEA)
involvement with supporting
teachers in legal issues. She
also introduced the
Licensure Code of
Professional Conduct for
Ohio Educators. OSEA was
fortunate to have such an
informative presentation
about the law and its
relation to our future
careers.

Instructional Practices,
Project-Based Learning,
Learning Management
Systems, and Achievement
Testing. Through telling
about his personal
experiences and his
knowledge as a principal,
Travis Morris encouraged
professional growth and
challenged future educators
to focus on what they can
do to facilitate student
learning.

OSEA Lunch & Learn was excited to welcome Angie Leitnaker and Keith Robinson on
October 13th. In separate breakout sessions, the Early and Middle Childhood majors heard from
former OU-L graduates who now teach in the local community. Early Childhood listened to
Angie Leitnaker as she discussed classroom environment. Her presentation was about student
empowerment and creating a positive learning environment for students. Its imperative for
students to take ownership of their own learning; therefore, educators should encourage
students to make connections by seeing, hearing, and valuing information. A positive
classroom environment is achieved by addressing how students feel when theyre around you.
As educators, we need to greet and compliment students. Ways in which we can achieve an
environment conducive to learning is instituting ideas such as, I believe in you, You can
succeed, and I can if I try.
Keith Robinson spoke to Middle
Childhood majors about student engagement.
Signs of engagement are students talking,
moving, singing, etc. He specified that in order
to engage students, educators must make
activities relevant to the students. Some tools
that he uses are Instagram and Kahoot.
Social media is an awesome tool to use in
order to engage students, enhance their
learning through real-world connections,
and also include students families. Keith
Robinson also touched on the importance
of student/teacher rapport. He challenged
professional development and the
importance of hard work by stating, If you
blow your education, its not likely you
will do any better in your classroom.

Jenny OHare, Director of
Instructional Services for
Lancaster City Schools,
spoke to the OSEA group on
October 27. Her
presentation focused on
curriculum and instruction
along with relevant topics in
education such as response
to intervention (RTI) and
formative assessment (FIP).
She discussed LCS initiatives
and the current challenges
facing the school district.
She explained how the
district is goal-oriented.
Every aspect of the district,
whether its working with the
current building project, or
preparing students for

OSEA members showing off their

creative crafts

testing, teachers and

administrators work
toward common goals.
She provided great
insight on how a districts
leadership initiatives
trickle down through
every school, grade, and
ultimately teacher.
We were excited to hear
possible ways LCS
teachers and OUL
education majors could
strengthen our partnerships.
One such plan would
include inviting OUL students
to professional development
opportunities offered by the
Lancaster City School District
for its teachers, allowing OUL
students to make
connections and grow
professionally with teachers
already in the field.
Jenny OHare expressed
that although teaching is a
demanding occupation, the
reward far outweighs the
struggle. She encouraged us
to express our passion and
deliver on that passion. Our
goal should be to help a
district accomplish its
mission, and as Jenny stated
it herself, If youre not in it
for the students, you may
want to reconsider
teaching.
