A Case for LED Lighting

In recent years, the improved utilisation of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) has seen
the advent of highly efficient lighting, which is applicable to many situations. For
example, the Swedish company IKEA has begun using LED lightbulbs in all of their
lights, and even sells replacement bulbs of their own brand.
LED lighting is desirable for three reasons:
Efficiency
Scalability
Versatility
In comparison to a typical incandescent lightbulb that could be found in a desk
lamp, an LED lightbulb of a similar brightness would be significantly cooler. This is
due to the fact that it converts less of the electricity applied to it to heat energy, and
more of it to light. This makes the lightbulb more efficient.
LED lightbulbs usually consist of several LEDs placed on a circuitboard in close
proximity, behind a layer of translucent material to diffuse the light. The number of
LEDs in a bulb can be changed, and the shape of the circuitboard also. This
provides the ability to create large or small bulbs.
There exist LEDs that can change colour across a spectrum of Red Green and Blue
(RGB). By using RGB LEDs, a lightbulb can be manufactured that can change
colour to suit the user.
