Art News:
Clay has been all the buzz in Art! The tactile, hands on problem solving qualities of clay are unique and I am so happy our classes
can experience this medium. Classes are working on their projects in one of these six stages: Slip, Wet/Plastic, Leather hard, Bone
Dry, Bisque Ware, and Glazed Ware. We cant wait for you to see them!
5th graders are designing their own tiny fairy/hobbit/troll/dream house for their clay projects. Hopeful they will be used to grow
wheatgrass, chia seeds, moss or other plants in or on their house like the Austrian artist Hundertwasser. Some 5th graders
proposed different project plans with drawings and thoughts on construction and are building more traditional looking houses or
masks.
4th graders are making their very own Stillwater panda sculpture from the book Zen Shorts by Jon J. Muth.
3rd graders are about ready to glaze their coiled tops of their cupcake containers inspired by the artist Wayne Thiebaud.
2nd graders are making clay birds inspired by the artist John James Audubon. They are comparing the North American
Whooping Crane to the Japanese Red Crowned crane. They have learned a lot about these birds habitat and migrations patterns as
we are pinching and pulling clay in making these fantastic birds.
1st graders are now glazing their pinch pot tea bowls and have been learning about tea bowls and ceremonies in Korea, China and
Japan. We hope to have some kind of tea ceremony when our bowls are all done. Anyone having knowledge or experience to share
with these first grade classes on tea ceremonies please let me know!
Kindergartners created texture clay pendants that have been glazed and are waiting for other projects to be ready to join them in
the kiln. They are now drawing a red fire monkey for the Chinese New Year which is on Monday, Feb. 8.
Thank you again to our Park Parents Club for giving our students the opportunity to experience this medium with the funds to
purchase our own kiln two years ago! On a side note we can always use ziplock baggies of any size to keep our projects fresh.
