Ultrasonic Machining Definition

Ultrasonic machining, is a machining operation in which a
vibrating tool oscillating at ultrasonic frequencies( > 20000 Hz)
is used to remove material from the work piece, aided by an
abrasive slurry that flows freely between the work piece and the
tool.

WORK MATERIAL

Tool Cone & Tip

It is also Called Horn amplifies and focus
the mechanical energy produced by the
transducer and imparts this to the work piece
in such a way that the energy utilization is
maximum.
It gives the force-amplitude ratio. Low gain
horn having low amplitude with high force
value vice-versa
Titanium is good material for tool cone.

Tool Cone & Tip

TOOL TIP
Attached with silver brazing with tool cone
or by means of screw.
Area of tool cone is always more the tip by
10-15 %
Area of tip influence the machining rate i.e
smaller the area contact with slurry larger
the penetration rate
For larger penetration rate sometimes
hollow horn are used.

ABRASIVE SLURRY
Aluminum Oxide(Al2o3)

Boron Carbide(B4C)
Silica Carbide(SiC)
Boron silica carbide
Diamond Dust

ABRASIVE SLURRY
Abrasive with larger grit size i.e fine grain
(1200-2000 grit) used for finishing purpose
Abrasive with smaller grit size i.e coarse
grain (200-800 grit) used for roughing
purpose
