Passage Master

Name: Marissa A Carreon

Book: The Devil We Know
Chapters: Chapter 5, 11 & Epilogue
Locate 3 passages of the story that your group should reread, discuss, and think about.
Passages should be important things for everyone to notice, remember, or think
about.
Choose a variety of passages, not all the same type--here are suggestions:

surprising/startling
confusing (something you wonder if other people understood)
descriptive writing: figurative language, strong verbs, etc. (identify literary devices) important
(maybe a clue? foreshadowing?)
controversial
event (elicits different opinions from group members)

During Your Group Meeting, Do the Following:

1.
Make sure everyone opens to the right page and help them find where the passage begins.
2. Either
read it aloud yourself, have everyone read it silently, or ask someone to read it
3. Tell your
reasons for selecting each passage; ask for comments. Do they agree with your choices?
Page 249 Paragraph(s) First three paragraphs The first 3 words of the paragraph are In the Middle East
This is interesting (or puzzling) because:
I think the author conveys his message very clearly in this passage, what his intentions for the book were
form the very beginning. As Western civilizations we see the middle east as the media wants us to see them,
terrorist extremist. But in this book we were able to learn that they are mucho more than that. People who
have lived through conflict all of their lives, people with an impressing amount of history and
accomplishments we forget just because a few of them decided to become terrorists. I think its important to
understand this passage and to reflect on how we judge other people.
An interpretation that can be made from ANOTHER PASSAGE, found on Page 236, Paragraph 2
Would be that the author really is invested in changing the worlds image of Iran and the surrounding
cultures because he continues to remind us about Iran TODAY not of Iran of the past. To look beyond petty
actions a few of its people have made and try to call upon our own judgement now that we really
understand the story.
In today's reading, a CONNECTION to my personal experience and/or my knowledge appears on Page
252 Paragraph 5 and its not so much as a personal experience but more of a agreement. I agree with the
author that the actions the United States of America is making seem kind of hypocritical especially when

they are asking for many concessions they are not willing to give. I believe the US has to revise its
approach to the middle eastern problems.

My comment or question about this story is:

I found it very interesting, I now have a deeper understanding of what is going on those countries,
and their relationship with the USA are. I know this is only but an opinion on the authors point of
view, but he did use a lot of facts while explaining so I think the reader can come up with their own
judgment on the events that have occurred. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for
more knowledge on the subject, of the middle east and their conflicts.
