First film:
Today we had our first filming session and it proved to us
that a lot can go wrong if not careful and taught us a lot
about how to film and what mistakes to be careful of. For
example, once we got back we had found out that we could not
use any of the footage we had just filmed due to inadequate
lighting, resulting in grainy footage. We also found that the
180-degree rule had been broken in one scene, we also learned
that we had limited time to film outside as a fair part of our
production is to be filmed outside and this meant that we only
had about 45minutes to film the outdoor scenes before it was
too dark to film anymore.
Overall, this filming session was more of a lesson of how to
go about filming again and how to avoid possible obstacles.
Second film:
This filming session went much better than the first as we
filmed our outdoor scenes first to maximise video quality and
avoid grainy footage. However, despite filming outside first
we still didnt manage to film all of our outdoor scenes and
we have to leave the small number of scenes we didnt get for
the next film. The indoor filming went well as there was very
good availability of lighting and there was no time
constraint.
However, when we got back we found
variation of shots, e.g. close-ups
addition to this we found that one
to make it easier for the audience
incorporate the use of a POV shot.
Fourth film:
Today was our final film and what we did was re-film any poor
footage or scenes that could have been done better, when we
got to the location we filmed our outdoor scenes first as
usual then moved on inside and filmed some of the same scenes
again, just from different angles, to give us a wider
variation when it comes to the final edit.
When we got back we found that the footage was good, and we
are now able to go ahead and do the final edit.
Extra filming session:
This just to get extra shots that could boost the production
in terms of creativity and shots, such as better use of props.
We only had one of these and was needed in case of any
corruption of footage. In the end this session was very much
worth it as it boosted the production.
Overall experience:
Being the Director was a hard but rewarding experience as it
was hard to ensure that everyone was happy and organised, but
it was manageable, for example I had to ensure that the camera
man was doing his job well, and getting good shots, in terms
of rule of thirds, focus etc.
Some parts were difficult as I was responsible for character
positioning, I had to organise filming times and ensure that
actors were available and also keep everyone happy within the
filming environment. However, I believe that I was best suited
to this role within the group as I am the most organised, and
not too overbearing but can take charge when needed.
In conclusion it was worth it and I am happy with the footage
we have gathered.
