Respiratory system

Function of the respiratory system

the organ system that brings in
oxygen to the body and removes
carbon dioxide waste from the body
connects blood, air, and tissues
Parts of the system
Pharynx
the throat, a passageway for both air
and food

Respiratory system
Larynx
the "voicebox" at the top of the
trachea, contains two elastic folds of
tissue called vocal cords
Trachea
the "windpipe" which connects the
pharynx to the lungs.
a flap called the epiglottis closes the
trachea when you swallow

Respiratory system
Bronchi
the trachea splits into two branches,
one for each of the lungs
each branch is a "bronchus", and the
plural is "bronchi
air sacs at the very end of the
bronchioles, where the oxygen/
carbon dioxide exchange happens
with the blood the bronchi keep
branching into smaller and smaller
passages called bronchioles.

Respiratory system
Alveoli
air sacs at the very end of the
bronchioles, where the oxygen/ carbon
dioxide exchange happens with the blood
The carbon dioxide is removed from the
lungs and breathed out. Red blood cells in
the blood bind the oxygen and transport
it around the body to the cells that need
it.
Diaphragm
a large, flat muscle that expands and
contracts the chest, causing breathing
