Support Reauthorization and

Increased Funding of the Older

Americans Act to Enhance Older Adults
Dignity, Health, and Independence
An Advocacy Project
Heidi Livengood Chalflinch

Background
This is the 50th year since the enactment of
the OAA.
The OAA provides funding for many
services that support family care, health &
wellness, job training, long-term care
ombudsman, nutrition programs,
transportation, tribal assistance, programs
to prevent & address elder abuse, neglect
and exploitation.
Social workers assist with aging clients at
the local, state and federal level.

Changing Demographics &

Funding
Last authorized in 2006, the OAA expired in 2011.
The bipartisan Older American Act
Reauthorization Act of 2015 was passed
unanimously by the Senate; the bill still must
pass in the House.
Additionally OAA funding is lagging behind
inflation and changes in our nations aging
populations.
Aging of the Baby Boom generation; currently
there are 12 million seniors using long-term care
and support, this will more that double by 2050.

Policy Solutions
Advocate for the success and continuity of
the OAA by urging the House of
Representatives to fully endorse the Older
Americans Reauthorization Act of 2015
Continuing funding for the OAA programs by
ending sequestration and restoring all
programs to 2016 funding level or at a
minimum 2010 funding level.

Advocacy Letter

Dear Representative Boles,

I am a registered nurse and a senior social work student
at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. This
letter is to urge you to support the Older Americans
Reauthorization Act of 2015; as well as encourage your
peers in government to stand behind this important Act.
As public servants and natives of Moore County, North
Carolina we realize the impact of an aging population
and the importance of a strong grassroots effort to help
our elder population. Please join me in being an
advocate for the OAA and the many elders in need in
our community, state and country.
Sincerely, Heidi Livengood Chalflinch Carthage, NC
