1. Draw the y-enthalpy (vapor) curve and the x-enthalpy (liquid)
curve.
2. Draw a vertical line:
o Long, extending from liquid curve (C) downwards at XB.
o Long, intersecting liquid (B) and vapor (A) line at XD.
o Short, intersecting only the liquid (F) line at XF.
Points A, B, C and F are points that should be marked on the
graph.
3. Find Y at XF on vapor line; mark as point D. Connect with a line.
The line should extend so it intersects the XD vertical line (N).
4. Find Rmin = NA/AB.
5. P1 corresponds to the actual reflux ratio, R (R is a multiple of
Rmin. i.e. R=(const)(Rmin)). Solve for P1 as follows:
(P1-A)/(A-B)=cRmin P1=
Mark P1 vertically above N on the XD line.
6. Draw a P1F line. Extend it so it intersects XB vertical line (P2).
7. Connect YT to XT with a line. (T Top plate).
8. From point XT, draw a line to P1. Where the line intersects the
vapor line is YT-1.
9. Find XT-1 by interpolating equilibrium table at YT-1. Draw a line
from YT-1 to XT-1.
10. If any of the XT-iYT-i line intersects the P2FP1, Well abandon P1
and start using P2.
11. Since we are now using P2 instead of P1, draw a line P2XT-1 .
Where it intersects the vapor line is YT-2.
12. Find XT-2 by interpolating the equilibrium table, and use it to
find YT-3 by making a P2XT-2 line.
13. We continue doing this until we interpolate to find XT-i only to
realize that XT-i = XB (at point C).
14. The following should be noted:
o P1B Heat removed per unit mass/moles of product
from condenser.
o P2C Heat required per unit mass/moles of product for
reboiler.
