Big Idea - Perseverance

Minutes
General discussion and thoughts about inquiry. Popcorn of ideas recorded on chart paper.
What is inquiry? What is our spark? Big idea?
Consensus on the idea of pre/post writing samples to measure the effect of accountable talk
on student writing samples.

Day 1
1. Co-construct success criteria
-I can answer the question
-Use complete sentences
-Write super sentences (punctuation, finger spaces, neat, capitals to start the sentence)
-Use ideas to support my answer
Grade 1 - 1 idea to support my answer
Grade 2 - 2 ideas to support my answer
Grade 3 - 2 ideas to support my answer with an explanation.
Writing Task - What is perseverance?
When assessing, teacher to sort work samples into two general groups - students that got it
and those that didnt.
Day 2
1. Read the mentor text New Shoes
2. Have students post any questions, wonderings, opinions, thoughts or feelings on a sticky
note. Post on chart paper. Teacher to orally share all thoughts and group common
thinking/wonderings for accountable talk groups.
3. Review/Co-create norms for accountable talk (eg, eye contact, take turns talking)
4. Breakout groups.
5. Each group to come back to whole group and share their thinking.
Day 3
1. Review norms - what does accountable talk look like?
2. What does accountable talk sound like e.g.; I agree, I disagree, Could you tell me more
about your idea . . . Teachers may want to introduce posters at this point.
3. Think/Pair/Share - How does this book show perseverance?

Day 4 - Post writing opportunity


1. Review success criteria
2. Now that students have had an opportunity to discuss perseverance in groups, have them
use same success criteria to write.

February 29 - come with second writing task and video tape of marker students.
